The engine whistled when he was discovered lying on the track, but he did not move, and as the train could not be stopped in time, he was frightfully mangled. He died about 5 o'clock am. The deceased was a tailor and was employed at Dosch?'s tailoring establishment. Policemen -----art who passed the crossing but a few minutes before the accident, noticed him staggering up the street. His remains were taken to Rodney's undertaking establishment. He is said to have been an honest, industrious man, and his neighbors in Day alley where he lived say they never saw him intoxicated. He leaves a wife and three children, who are at present visiting at Mahoning Furnace. A Coroner's inquest was to have been held last evening, but as the witnesses could not be in attendance, it was postponed until this morning. A letter was received yesterday addressed to Mr NEWELL, from his wife who is visiting her father at Mahoning furnace, in which she states that the children are crying to come home to their father, requesting him to send some money. Mrs NEWELL had evidently not received the mournful tiding of her husband's fearful death. She is said to be a woman of an exceedingly nervous temperament, and the blow will fall upon her shoulders with crashing force. She was expected to arrive home on the one o'clock train this morning. Mr NEWELL's remains are still at Rodney's undertaking establishment. from The Pittsburgh Commercial Gazette dated Thursday, July 24, 1879 (page 4): At the inquest on James NEWELL, killed while sitting on the Fort Wayne railroad track Tuesday evening, the jury found that engine No. 5 had run over the man, and censured the company for not having grades erected at the crossing and a sufficient number of employees on the train.
