All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/allegheny/ ________________________________________________ from The Pittsburgh Press dated Wednesday, May 8 1889 (page 4): A Young Girl Killed Margaret O'BRIEN who lives at 69 Painters row and Margaret DONOVAN, a cigar-maker, who boarded at 109 Painters row, stepped from the east bound track of the P & L E railroad near their homes about 8 o'clock last evening to avoid an approaching train and were struck by an engine coming in the opposite direction. Miss O'BRIEN had her skull fractured and one leg mangled. Miss DONOVAN had her ankle and foot crushed. Both young women were taken to the Homeopathic hospital. Miss O'BRIEN died at an early hour this morning. Miss DONOVAN had the injured limb amputated below the knee. She will recover. from The Pittsburg Dispatch dated Wednesday, May 8 1889 (page 2): At about 8 o'clock Margaret DONOVAN and Margaret O'BRIEN were walking down the Pittsburg and Lake Erie Railroad tracks, opposite Painter's row. They saw an engine coming up the east-bound track, the one on which they were walking. They stepped off to one side, when they were both struck by an engine on the west-bound track. Miss O'BRIEN had her left leg completely ground to pieces and her skull was fractured. Miss DONOVAN had her foot and ankle mashed and was otherwise badly bruised. They were removed to the Homeopathic Hospital. The hospital authorities say that Miss O'BRIEN can not possible live, and Miss DONOVAN's leg will have to be amputated. The girls are both 21 years of age. They came from Wales together 13 months ago. Miss O'BRIEN is a servant girl and lived at No. 69 Painter's row. Miss DONOVAN is a cigar maker and boarded at No. 109 Painter's row. (. . .) Miss O'BRIEN died in the hospital at midnight. from the City of Pittsburgh Death Records: Margaret O'BRIAN, aged 21 years, single, died May 8 1889, crushed on Pitts. and L E RRoad, 34th Ward; born in Ireland; lived on West Carson, 34th Ward; burial in St Mary's Cemetery on May 9 1889. NOTES: On death certificate, surname originally written as BROWN - O'BRIAN was added at a later time.
