(Pittsburgh, Pa.): June 15, 1864 Died May 5th, 1864, Mr. Samuel Perkins, Co. I, 63d Reg’t. P. V., aged 23 years, son of Mr. Joseph Perkins, of Versailles Twp., Allegheny County, Pa. He fell, mortally wounded, in the battle of the wilderness, and died in an hour and a half after being borne from the field. The deceased was a child of the covenant, having been baptized in infancy by Rev. James Graham. He was a dutiful son and an affectionate brother. He united himself with the First Presbyterian church of M’Keesport, June 1st, 1861. He delighted in the services of the sanctuary, and conscientiously performed every Christian duty. He entered upon military service in September, 1861… During the seven days' battle under Gen. M'Clellan before Richmond, he was sick in the hospital, and was taken prisoner. He was soon paroled, and spent four months at Annapolis, Md. He was wounded in the arm in the battle of Chancellorsville, May 3d, 1863. His brother Thomas, of the 105th Reg't P. V., was near him when he fell, and was with him when he died, and received from his lips his last words, "God's will be done; I am ready and willing to die." Thus passed away a patriot Christian, from that " Wilderness" battle field, baptized with the blood of so many of America's noblest and best sons, to his home in the heavens.
