All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/allegheny/ ________________________________________________ from The Pittsburgh Gazette dated Saturday, January 30, 1904 (page 4): John W PATTERSON, aged 78, court crier ( ) quarter sessions court No. 2 for the last ( ) years, died on Thursday at his home in West Liberty, after an illness of two months of Brights' disease. 'Squire' PATTERSON was appointed by Judge BOGGS and held the record in this county, having outlived many judges and other officials of the local courts. He was a son of John W PATTERSON and was born in the western penitentiary while his father was warden of that institution. His father was also a former county commissioner and a 'squire' for many years. 'Squire' PATTERSON opened court in many famous cases, including that of Charlotte FIFE, Mrs GRINDER, the BIDDLE brothers and Mrs Kate SOFEL. He was a veteran of the Mexican and civil wars and at the opening of the latter war he was a recruiting officer in Pittsburgh. He was the first burgess of West Liberty and for many years previous to his death held the office of justice of the peace. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, Knights of the Mystic Chain and the Grand Army of the Republic. The latter organization will have charge of the funeral, at which the Rev Dr LAW, pastor of the Knollson Methodist Episcopal church, will officiate at 2 o'clock pm tomorrow. Mrs PATTERSON died two years ago. He is survived by three sons, W W PATTERSON, a Fourth avenue real estate broker, J Z and Constable W B PATTERSON of West Liberty. His remains will be buried in Mt Lebanon cemetery. ~~~~~ John W PATTERSON is the son of John and Elizabeth PATTERSON. His wife is Ruth, and his children are Warren W PATTERSON, John Z PATTERSON, and Wilbur B PATTERSON. John has three known siblings - Mathilda L, who married Isaac McILVAINE; Evaline W, who married George W THOMAS; and Caroline, who married Jacob HANEY.
