On Saturday morning William Phillips, who has made a reputation on the Pennsylvania railroad as an engineer who could be trusted on any occasion, and who was always to be relied upon, died at the residence of Robert Plenter, in Pittsburgh. Mr. Phillips, who was in the 39th year of his age, had been sick for nearly a year past, his illness dating really from the time when he undertook the task of running the Jarrett & Palmer train en route to California from New York to Pittsburgh without a stop. He accomplished the feat in less than schedule time, but the strain on the system was so severe that he never recovered from it. He continued on duty, and was called upon invariably when a trusty man was required, but his health grew more precarious, and he was finally compelled to relinquish his position. His death occasions wide-spread sorrow among the employes of the company in this city, who hoped that a rest would restore him again to health. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Monday, May 3, 1880
