PORTER

  Charles D. Porter, master mechanic of the Pittsburgh division of the 
Pennsylvania railroad, with offices at Twenty-eighth street, 
Pittsburgh, died rather suddenly of pneumonia at his home in that city 
at 10:45 Thursday morning.  Mr. Porter had been ill about ten days and 
had so improved it was thought he would recover, when he sustained a 
relapse a couple of days ago.  Word of Mr. Porter's death was received 
with sincere regret among Pennsy officials in this city, where he had 
been employed in various official positions.  Previous to leaving 
Altoona in 1916, he was for several years assistant engineer to the 
general superintendent of motive power, leaving here to take the 
position of master mechanic at Pittsburgh.  Mr. Porter, while in 
Altoona, was very active in organizing and boosting the Pennsy system 
athletics and was the first president of the General Office Athletic 
association, holding that office until he left the city.  Mr. Porter 
was aged 35 years and is survived by his wife and three children, 
living in Pittsburgh.  The body will be taken on No. 15 tomorrow night 
to Fort Wayne, Ind., where he was born and raised and where his parents 
still reside.  Burial will be made there Tuesday.
