Miss Susan was buried on Sunday and the mother died the following day. *Oakdale column ************************************************************************ Taken from McDonald Pa Outlook 25 Sep 1919 On Thursday evening, September 11, 1919 at 9:30 o'clock, occurred the death of Susan Josephine PORTMAN, at her home north of Oakdale. For the past eighteen months Miss PORTMAN had been in poor health. She was born in Oakdale and was a graduate nurse of the Mercy hospital, Pittsburgh. She also took a post graduate course and worked faithfully until about five years ago, when her health broke down ans she was obliged to give up her work and stay at home. She was a very successful nurse and a good Christian girl. During the past few years Miss PORTMAN has delivered farm produce to a large number of Oakdale people and she has won the love and esteem of them all, even at Easter time, she would remember the little children at the homes where she would be delivering produce and by her acts of kindness she will never be forgotten. Blessing services were held on Sunday afternoon, September 14, in the St. Patrick's Catholic church, Noblestown, at 3 o'clock. Interment was private. She leaves six sisters and one brother. Upon returning from the burial of Miss Susan, the mother, Mrs. Mary Anne PORTMAN, was found to be critically ill with heart trouble and on Sunday evening, September 14th, at 9:45 o'clock, she passed peacefully away to meet her daughter in their heavenly home. She was the wife of the late Nicholas PORTMAN and was born in North side Pittsburgh, May 17th, 1842. On May 12, 1862, she was united in marriage to Nicholas PORTMAN in the St. Michael's church, Pittsburgh. Before moving to Oakdale she lived at Dormont and for the past fifty years has lived in North Fayette township. The grandfather of Miss PORTMAN was Jacob SNYDER, who was one of the early settlers of Pittsburgh, having owned what was once known as Manchester. His farm occupied what is now the business section of North side. He was also collector of Ports of Pittsburgh. Mrs. PORTMAN was a daughter of Joseph and Anny SNYDER. She leaves six daughters and one son to mourn; Mrs. J. T. REILLY, Mrs. Alex. PALESKY, Edward, Anna, Mary Ella and Agnes. High Mass was held Wednesday morning, September 17th, at 9:30 o'clock in the St. Patrick's church. Mrs. PORTMAN also held a high place among the people of this community, being a loving and kind mother and true to what ever she undertook. For many years she also delivered produce to the Oakdale people, and therefore she was well known through out the district. The PORTMAN family have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in their double sorrow. ***************************************************************** *Compiler's note: The mother and father have a headstone at St. Patrick's cemetery, but there isn't one for Susan.
