Mr POWELL was born in Ebervale, Wales, and came to this country when about 18 years old. He located in Johnstown, where he began as a coal miner. He later engaged in the grocery and dry goods business with his brother. For 10 years, he was employed in the post office, and then entered the county commissioners' office. He was a member of the Chatham Street Welsh Baptist Church. Mr POWELL had resided in the Fourteenth ward for over 35 years. He was a member of Washington Lodge, No. 253, F & A M, the Knights of Pythias and the Ivories, a Welsh society. A wife and five children, J E of the Pittsburgh Bank for Savings, William H of the Monongahela River Coal and Coke Co., Kate M, Caroline and Mary, survive. from the City of Pittsburgh Death Records: John POWELL, aged 59 years 10 months 14 days, married, died October 30 1903, chronic interstitial pulmonitis; son of John and Elizabeth POWELL, both of Wales; born in Wales; lived at 68 Lawn; burial in Union Dale Cemetery on November 1 1903. >From census records, wife is Gwennie, and there was another daughter, Lizzie. The brother is Elias.
