REYNOLDS INJURED RUN DOWN BY A SHIFTING ENGINE TODAY He Was Crossing the P McK & Y Tracks at Market Street and Stepped in Front of the Locomotive His Condition Is Critical Robert Reynolds, one of the most popular old residents of the city, met with a probably fatal accident this morning about 10 o'clock. Mr. Reynolds is president of the Third Avenue Bridge company and had been at the First National Bank depositing the receipts from bridge tolls. He was on his way back home and at the Market street crossing stepped directly in front of a P., McK & Y shifting engine. Mr. Reynolds is very deaf and it is presumed was walking along in a study not noticing anything. The engine was not more than 15 feet from him when he stepped on the track and it was impossible for the engineer to stop in time to avoid the accident. The board on the engine struck Mr. Reynolds across the shins, throwing him violently against the front of the engine on his breast. Fortunately he doubled up his legs or they would have both been cut off. His left hand got under one of the wheels and was badly lacerated. The injured man was carried into Central police station and complained of a pain in his breast over the heart, where he fell on the engine. As soon as possible, Mr. Reynolds was removed to his home, corner of Third avenue and Water street, and Drs. T. R. VanKirk, McCune(?), and Blackburn were summoned to attend him. His legs are not broken but they have greatly swollen. A section of the little finger was crushed off his hand and two other fingers were badly mangled. The hand is also cut between the fore and second fingers. After a consultation the doctors feared blood poison would set in and desired to amputate the crushed fingers, but his family decided to not have this done. Late this afternoon the unfortunate man was very poorly. Robert Reynolds is about 85 years old. He came to McKeesport about 15 years ago from the west. He is considered one of the wealthiest men in the city. He was born in Ireland but has been in this country about 60 years. He is the father of Thomas Reynolds, the well-known real estate dealer of Reynoldton.
