Age 91, of Pleasant Hills, on Monday, January 30, 2006. Daughter of the late Wesley and Emma Cogswell. Sister of the late Raymond and Robert Cogswell. Alice retired after 30 years from West Real Estate Co.. She was cofounder of "Animal Friends", the first no kill animal shelter, located on Penn Avenue in Pittsburgh. At the height of World War II, Alice responded to the needs of animals left behind by owners serving in the Military. She organized the initial group of volunteers to assist these animals, which led to the opening of the shelter. She dedicated over fifty years of service for the humane treatment of animals. She served as President and Board member for over 15 years. She was a member of the "American Humane Society" and also the "Animal Care and Welfare Society". She also was a member of "Ladies Auxiliary" for Pleasant Hills Volunteer Fire Company, where she served as President. Her love for animals and her passion for their humane treatment were constant to the end. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, 11 a.m. at the JEFFERSON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, INC., 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pleasant Hills. Inurnment at Jefferson Memorial Park.
