SMART - On Thursday, June 11, 1896, at 12:45 pm, Rachel Ellen, relict
of the late Prof Walter SMART, in her 71st year. Funeral services at
the residence of her son, C W SMART, No. 2?? Arch street, Allegheny,
on Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Interment private later.
 
from The Pittsburgh Press dated Friday, June 12, 1896 (page 11):
 
Mrs Rachel E SMART, aged 71 years, died at 12:45 pm yesterday at the
residence of her sons, 2?? Arch street, Allegheny. Deceased was the
wife of the late Prof Walter SMART, a well-known Allegheny instructor.
She leaves three sons and four daughters - C W, Al W, Charles O and
Mrs Hugh GLASGOW, Mrs J H COVERT, Mrs Wm COUDON (sic), and Mrs H W
YERKES. Funeral services at her late residence, 261 Arch street, on
Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Interment later at Highwood
cemetery.

Rachel Ellen SMART, aged 70 years 7 months 1 day, widow, housekeeper,
died June 11, 1896, heart failure; born in England; lived at 28
Anderson Street; burial in Highwood Cemetery on June 13, 1896.
 
NOTES: From census listings, children are Ella (Mrs GLASGOW), Isabell
(Mrs COVERT), Florence N (Mrs YERKES), Clarence W, Alfred W, Rachel E
(Mrs CONDON) and Charles.
