All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/allegheny/ ________________________________________________ from The Pittsburgh Press dated Saturday, May 5, 1900 (page 1): Sherman SMITH, 36 years, a brakeman on a yard engine of the Allegheny Valley railroad, was killed while shifting cars at Schoenberger's mill, Fifteenth and Pike street, shortly after 3 o'clock this morning. None of the crew saw the accident but the body was found under the wheels badly mangled and from the position it is supposed he fell between the cars. SMITH was injured on the road about three months ago and probably became weak and fell from the effect of the former injury. The case was reported to the coroner. from the City of Pittsburgh Death Records: Sherman W SMITH, aged about 37 years, married, brakeman, died May 5, 1900, instantly killed by a train in the Shoenberger steelyard; son of John E and Sarah A SMITH, both of Ohio; born in Ohio; lived at 185 1/2 Long Alley; burial in St Mary's Cemetery on May 7, 1900. Patrick and Margaret FOX, both of Ireland; born in Pittsburgh; lived on West Carson Street; burial in St Mary's Cemetery on July 12, 1900. >From 1900 census records, Mary was 29 years of age. Her husband is Frank, to whom she had been married 3 years, and her son is William.
