SPEER is a brakeman on the Fort Wayne railroad. Yesterday he was engaged in shifting cars from one track to another. At the time of the accident he was standing on an engine, and in attempting to step back upon a freight car he fell to the ground. His leg was caught and he was dragged quite a distance, when a wheel passed over one of his legs, crushing it just below the knee. He was carried to the western baggage room of the Fort Wayne Railroad and Drs HAMILTON and BUCHANAN were summoned to dress the man's injuries. As Mr SPEER was a man of family, residing on Robinson Street, Allegheny, and the amputation of the injured leg was found to be necessary, it was decided to take him to the Pennsylvania Hospital, where the operation was successfully performed. He is now doing as well as could be expected. from The Pittsburgh Daily Gazette dated Thursday, August 12, 1875 (page 4): At an early hour yesterday morning, John SPEER, whose injury at the P R R yards, near the Union Depot we noted yesterday, died at the West Penn Hospital.
