Two engines came together and STEEL was caught in the wreckage and received such injuries that he died a short term after being taken to the West Penn Hospital. The engine on which STEEL was working had just come in off a run and was being taken up to the round house. The accident occurred at about 5 o'clock. A switch was set wrong and the engine, instead of keeping on the Pennsylvania tracks switched off to the Valley at Twenty-sixth street. Before the engineer could make a move to stop the engine it ran into a Valley engine which was coming in the opposite direction, the two engines coming together right by the cab. STEEL was pinned against the side of the boiler and it was some time before he could be extricated. He was 31 years old and married and his home was at Manorville. He had been in the employ of the road for about eight years. from The Pittsburgh Press dated Monday, December 11, 1899 (page 5): Peter R KELLY, of Ashton street, Allegheny, who was hurt in an accident on the Pittsburg & Fort Wayne railroad on December 6, died at the Mercy Hospital this morning.
