The accident happened at 5 o'clock and he died at 9 o'clock Saturday night. Leaving the home of his stepdaughter, Mrs. Margaret GORMAN where he had made a call, Mr. TOWNSEND stepped from behind a pile of brush on the tracks of the Oakdale and McDonald Railway company in front of an approaching car. He was knocked down and run over. Mr. TOWNSEND was born in Ireland. After seeing service in the British army in the Crimean war he came to Pittsburgh and worked in the steel mills there. When the clash between the North and South was precipitated he enlisted as a member of the __th Pennsylvania regiment of infantry and saw active service throughout almost the entire war. For a number of years, however, he had resided at Sturgeon, retiring and making his home with another stepdaughter, Mrs. Charles SPRINGER. When in his prime Mr. TOWNSEND was a man of unusual strength. He stood about six feet three inches. Wounded during an engagement in the Civil was he was told by the surgeon that he only had a few hours to live. After emphatically informing the physician that he did not know what he was talking about, Townsend made a remarkable recovery. Mr. TOWNSEND was twice married. A son Daniel, by his first marriage, is now with an Ohio regiment on the Mexican border. Mrs. Elizabeth MARTIN, of Tyrone, Pa., is a daughter by this marriage. He leaves one son by his second marriage, William TOWNSEND of Sturgeon. Funeral services were held at the SPRINGER home in Sturgeon Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment was in the Homewood cemetery, Pittsburgh.
