All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/allegheny/ ________________________________________________ from The Pittsburgh Press dated Thursday, December 10, 1896 (page 1): Albert WHITTAKER, a resident of Hazelwood, was run over and killed by a freight train on the Pittsburgh, Virginia, & Charleston railroad, at Hays station, at 6 o'clock last night. His body was terribly mangled. WHITTAKER was 25 years old and lived with his parents on Frank street, near Hazelwood avenue. In his pockets was found a store book and a memorandum book which belonged to Detective P J FITZGERALD. Just how the man met his death is unknown. The coroner has been notified and will hold an inquest. (found under article titled, Railway Casualties) from the City of Pittsburgh Death Records: Albert WHITTAKER, aged 27 years, single, laborer, died on December 9, 1896 on the P, C, & Y Railroad. He was born in Pittsburgh to Thomas and Sarah Jane WHITTAKER (both from England). He was buried in Homewood Cemetery on December 12, 1896. (A Thomas WHITTAKER was listed as an owner of a plot at Homewood Cemetery, Section 9 Lot 31 or 34 - number is not clear - but I have not confirmed if it is the same individual named above.)
