IS DEAD Veteran Member of the Pittsburg Bar Passes Away Deceased was connected with Best Families H. Brady Wilkins, for 53 years. a member of the Allegheny County Bar died yesterday morning at l:45 o'clock at the West Penn Hospital. Mr. Wilkins was 76 years of age. Deceased had been in extremely poor health for several years and his death was looked for at any time. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from Fullerton's Chapel, Ninth Street. Mr. Brady Wilkins was born November 3, 1824 at Madison Barracks, Sacketts Harbor, N.Y., where his father Captain John Holmes Wilkins, U.S.A.. was then stationed. Deceased was a grandson of General John Wilkins, Jr. and a nephew of Judge William Wilkins, famous Pittsburgers in their day. His Mother was, prior to her marriage, Miss Mary Darragh, daughter of John Darragh, second mayor of Pittsburg. The family resided at Market and Third Streets. Mary Darragh was a sister of Honorable Cornelius Darragh. In infancy, Mr. Wilkins was brought to Pittsburg. Mr. Wilkins received his early education in the Pittsburg Schools notably David Stone's Boarding School at Killbuck, the residence of the late Mrs. Robert McKnight. In 1836, Mr. Wilkins entered the Western University of Pennsylvania under the Reverend Robert Bruce, the father of D. D. Bruce, Esq., graduating and receiving his degree in 1842. He then entered the junior class at Yale College, New Haven and graduated from that institution with the degree of B. A. in 1844. Afterward he received the degree of M.A. from the same institution. Mr. Wilkins began the study of law under Honorable Cornelius Darragh, continued it under Charles Bradford, Esq. and was admitted to the Allegheny County Bar in 1847. Since 1825, he has not resided out of Pittsburg or Allegheny. On April 13, 1848. he was married to Sophie E., daughter of Dr. William H. Denny and granddaughter of Ebenezer Denny, the first mayor of Pittsburg. Seven children were born to the couple. The surviving children are William Denny and H. Brady Wilkins, Jr. Mr. Wilkins served several terms as one of the Board of Managers of The House of Refuge, now Morganza and also as a director of the Exchange National Bank. He never sought or filled a political office. Mr. Wilkins had amassed considerable wealth but in 1875 met with financial misfortunes and lost nearly everything he possessed. Since that time he has led practically a retired life, although his advice has often been sought as a consulting attorney. He was one of the original members of the Pittsburg Club and one of the organizers and charter members of the Duquesne Club on Sixth Avenue. Addendum: Judge Wilkins, as he was familiarly known among his friends, was probably one of the best known attorneys in this section of the country and was associated with Marcus W. Acheson, now Judge of the U. S. Circuit Court and also with Hill Durgwin in several of the largest legal cases fought in the courts in those days. The Dispatch, Pittsburg, Pa., September 22, 1900
