WILKINS Colonel John Darragh Wilkins, Aged 78 years, died Wednesday at his home at Washington, D.C. where he had resided since his retirement from the United States Army in 1886. Colonel Wilkins was well known in Pittsburg, having been born here in 1822. He was the son of Capt. John Holmes Wilkins, U.S.A. and Mary Darragh, daughter of John Darragh, first mayor of Pittsburg. He received his early education in an old stone school house in Lawrenceville and was appointed to West Point in 1842. He graduated and fought in the Civil War as Captain of the Third United States Infantry. In 1864, he was made Major of the Fifteenth Infantry and in 1873 Lieutenant Colonel of the Eighth Infantry. In 1882 he became Colonel of the Fifth Infantry, which title he bore at the time of his retirement in 1886. He was a member of the Astec Society of the Mexican War; the Loyal Legion and the Army and Navy Club of Washington, D.C. Colonel Wilkins is survived by one daughter, who is the wife of Major Charles Porter, U.S.A. His wife died about three years ago. A brother W. D. Wilkins, a member of the Allegheny County Bar, resides in this city. The Dispatch, Pittsburg, Pa., February 20, 1900 Note: His wife's name was Caroline and he had two daughters, Carrie and Emma.
