He was cleaning a car in the train shed, when a train was backed against the car. He was stooping to get a sponge from a bucket of water when the car was struck. His head was crushed into jelly, and he died instantly. The body was removed to the morgue. (found under the article titled, Killed By A Train) from The Pittsburgh Press dated Saturday, January 20, 1900 (page 1): A verdict of accidental death was returned in the case of Lee WILKINSON of 814 Monitor street, Allegheny. WILKINSON was a Pullman car porter, and was crushed between two cars at the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie station Thursday night. (found under the article titled, Work of the Coroner) from the City of Pittsburgh Death Records: Leigh WILKINSON, aged 44 years and 25 days, married, porter, instantly killed on January 18, 1900, by being crushed between a car and a bumper on the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie railroad. His parents were listed as Joseph WILKINSON and Mary JOHNSON, and he was born in Virginia. His home address was 814 Monitor street, Allegheny. He was buried in Union Dale Cemetery on January 21, 1900. 1900 Allegheny City census lists his wife, Mary WILKINSON, with children Ralph, Leigh, Mary and Clara at the Monitor street address. City directories note the spelling of his first name as Lee.
