Thompson Journals Written: November 18, 1925 Letters were granted Mch 2, 1926 & filed same day by Gray, Thompson & Rose Attys 312 4th Ave, The principal points in the will were: I, Joseph C. Carothers of Patton Tp give my entire estate to Commonwealth Trust Co of Pgh who he appoints Exrs & Trustees for following uses: Gives them all the powers he himself had but suggests that they confer with his nieces, Sarah Carothers Whitmarsh & Amanda Carothers Wallace & the Rev A.W. Hayes surviving husband of my niece Margaret C. Hayes and my Atty A.M. Thompson all of whom are acquainted with my estate & wishes. With the exception of one acre hereinafter mentioned, I direct my Exrs to convert as soon as possible, all my estate into cash stating that he has several tracts of farm land & if necessary can have 10 yrs to sell same & they to do the following things 1st to pay my faithful housekeeper, Laura Maxwell $10,000 in cash & its collateral inheritance tax 2d Exr to select 1 A on the Monroeville Road adjg Turtle Creek on which Laura Maxwell may build a house. 3d To trustees 1st Pres Church Turtle Creek $500 4th To Trustees Cross Roads Pres Church Monroeville, Pa $1500 to be used in caring for the burial lots of the various members of the Carothers family located in said cemetery of said Cross Roads Pres Ch & also in the Public Cem adjoining & if any of income remains to go toward Pastor's salary. He then makes following bequests if estate is sufficient, if not, each to be diminished pro rata 5th to the daughters of my deceased brother, David S. Carothers who may survive me & to George K.C. Hayes, son of Margaret Carothers Hayes, a deceased daughter of David S. Carothers $1000 each in cash. The names of the daughters of David S. Carothers now living are: Sarah J. Whitmarsh of Swissvale, Pa & Amanda C. Wallace of Detroit, Mich 6th To the daughters of my decd brother James Carothers who now reside at Swissvale, Pa, should they survive me $1000 each in cash. Those of them now living are Matilda G. Carothers, Sarah Carothers Johnson, & Wilhelmina Carothers. 7th to the son & daughters of my decd brother Robert Carothers who may survive me $1000 in cash. Those now living are: Charles Carothers of Los Angeles, Calif, Sarah M. Allen of Grand Forks, North Dakota & Wilhelmina Carothers of Grand Forks, North Dakota 8th to the Western Theological Sem of Pres Ch at Pittsburgh, Pa $1000 in cash 9th to baord of Home missions of Pres Ch of U.S. $200 in cash 10th to board of Foreign missions of Pres Ch of U.S. $200 in cash 11th to board of Ministerial relief of Pres Ch of U.S. $500 in cash 12th to board of pub & S.S. work of Pres Ch of U.S. $250 in cash 13th All residue to be divided equally between my nieces Sarah J.
