Brown buwbrown@concast.net July 20, 2008, 4:34 pm Report of the Visiting Committee, House of Refuge of Western Pennsylvania: Mr. Bernard Miller applies for discharge of his daughter Cornelia, aged about 15. Committed last May - now in Class No. 5 - she was committed at the instance of her father for being at a house of bad repute. Her mother is in consumption and her father wants her at home to take care of her mother. He is satisfied that she did not know the house she was in was a bad house. She was in it only two days, and her father was in too much of a passion about it to listen to her explanations. Her mother is so feeble to be able to work, and he has to employ a servant. Miller is a blacksmith, lives in 5th Ward Pittsburgh, No. 500 Liberty Street opposite 5th Ward Market. Refer to Mr. Sampson for his character. Your Committee feel inclined to recommend her discharge.
