Brown buwbrown@comcast.net July 17, 2008, 3:44 pm Report of Executive Committee of the House of Refuge of Western Pennsylvania. Cases of Catherine Vetterl & Catherine Hess committed two sweeks ago by Squire Victor Scriba and held over for defective commitments there being only one witness in each case. The father & mother of Catherine Vetterl appeared & applied for her discharge, saying that they had committed her to the House on account of the reports of people, but that on investigation they find that the stories told them about her were not true. The Squire believes her to be a good girl...and will not add another witness to the commitment. The father is a carpenter and owns the house he lives in in Reserve Township. Your Com. advised her discharge on account of defective commitment and the impossibility of having it corrected. In regard to the case of Catherine Hess...Squire Scriba says her father left for Harrisburg the day after he committed his daughter and that he cannot add another witness to the commitment on this account. Catherine is unwilling to go to her father on account of his bad treatment. She would like to go to Mrs. Jane McGrew, mother of Mr. George McGrew, (illegible word) Mechanics Bank, if she will take her. She is in delicate health - appears as if she was going into consumption.
