Brown buwbrown@concast.net July 18, 2008, 12:41 pm Letter from Joseph Mettler, 296 Centre Ave., Pittsburgh, to Mr. Quay (Superintendent of Pennsylvania Reform School at Morganza): Kindly inform us why we have not received a letter from Edward. I have written twice and as it is over a month since we last heard from him thought perhaps he might be sick. If it would not be too much trouble, kindly let us known how many merits Edward has. As his time is so near up, we have a position in view for him.... (letteractually written by M.E. Mettler) Additional Comments: Written in pencil on the top of the letter: 5948 (merits), near 6 (6000 merits required before inmate could be considered for discharge) Note on reverse: There is no other reason than that he doesn't write. I ask him yesterday why he didn't write a letter and he said he didn't want to. Of course there is nothing compulsory on his part. At least I have never understood it in that way. (signed) H.D.
