Brown buwbrown@comcast.net June 6, 2008, 11:40 am Letter from G.M. Pennar, New Castle, PA, to J.A. Quay, Supt., Morganza, PA: I called on Squire F.M. King, South Side, the gentleman to whom the complaint was made about Hattie Tyler and Kate Harbough. The Squire said he knew the woman, Mrs. Lynn, that the girls were boarding with, and that she was a married woman and had always kept, as far as he knew, a proper home. The complaints made by Mrs. Dugan and the other woman were on account of the girls sitting on her back- door steps and Mrs. Lynn's, as they were adjoining houses. He said no doubt, from the complaints, that the girls had been pretty loud and said things they should not have said, and possibly staid a little later than they should, but the women had learned that the girls were from Morganza, and they appeared to be determined to get them out of there at all hazards. He said if the girls were willing to be placed in homes separate, away from Pittsburgh and Allegheny, that he would recommend that it would be the best thing that could be done for them, as if they were ever going to do any good, now is the proper time to give them a chance; so he would recommend that you would let them be placed out. I then went up near the home where this woman lived and found that there had never been any complaint of the home of Mrs. Lynn in that neighborhood until the girls went to boarding there. I learned Hattie Tyler's mother and Hattie could not get along on account of too much beer in the house. I also know, from my own personal knowledge, that one of the complaintants expects a great deal from any person coming from your place. I am convinced that if the girls were separated it would be well to give them another trial.
