It has been made possible by the advertisements of your local merchants. Will you show them your appreciation by patronizing them. We hope you will read this Directory entire and preserve it for daily reference. Should you find a mistake, please make the correction in writing and mail it to Rev. W.C. Sell, Kittanning, Pa., R.D. 3, before the next issue. No subscription price is being made, but if anyone wishes to make a contribution, it will be welcomed. We shall appreciate your reaction to this publication. * * * CHRISTMAS IS HERE AGAIN Christmas, as you know, is the time to make little girls and boys happy, joyous and conscious of the little "Baby" Jesus. No one will want to miss Church on that day. Each of us will want to GIVE to MISSIONS as God freely gave Christ for our salvation. * * * LET'S HAVE NO "BLACK-OUT" IN AMERICA Although many countries are now at war, and each night, many homes and cities have to remain in darkness, yet as the Christmas season comes and we again commemorate the "Birth of Jesus Christ", let us not forget that it was "He" that said: "I am the LIGHT of the WORLD", "Blessed are the PEACE MAKERS for they shall be called the children of God", "I am the WAY, the TRUTH and the LIFE, no man cometh unto the Father but by ME", and "By this shall ALL MEN KNOW that YE are MY DISCIPLES, if YE HAVE LOVE ONE FOR ANOTHER." At Christ's birth, it was said of Him, by a multitude of angels: "Glory to God in the highest and on earth PEACE, GOOD WILL TOWARD MEN." As the NEW YEAR is ushered in, may this be the SPIRIT, ATTITUDE and LIFE of every professed Christian. In thinking of the lovely rugs, chairs, tables, flowers and many other lovely gifts you dear members have presented to Mrs. Sell, Ruth and myself, at this Christmas season, we wish not only to THANK YOU, but also to pray God's richest blessings to continually be yours. Since we are getting out no other Christmas greeting, may this letter bring to YOU and all our dear FRIENDS and RELATIVES, our "VERY, MERRY CHRISTMAS and A Prosperous NEW YEAR GREETINGS." Our Christian Endeavor takes in folks of all ages. There are three different groups: The Junior-Intermediates, Young People, and the Adults. You will be welcomed in any of these groups. If space would allow, some fine past achievements could be printed. Let us all look forward to and plan to attend the "C. E." Birthday celebration in Center Hill, January 28 at 7:30; and the "Union B.Y.P.D." Rally of District No. 9 on February 16, 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Why not start the New Year right by attending regularly? The Adult department has purchased several dozen large print New Testaments with Psalms and are studying the various Books, chapter by chapter under the leadership and teaching of Mrs. W.C. Sell. So far she has taught the following Books: Matthew, James, Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, 1 Peter, 2 Peter, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John, 1 Timothy. (Now studying 2 Timothy.) When money becomes master the man is doomed to the worst of bondage. Golden shackles bind harder than all others Page 4: DID YOU KNOW: That - The Center Hill (Glade Run) Church of the Brethren BEGAN just 120 years ago? And that it started with only EIGHT MEMBERS? And now has on the (resident and non-resident) ROLL a total of 454 members? That - There has been THREE houses of worship, all near the same spot? The first one was erected in 1861; this was rebuilt in 1881, and during a series of revival meetings in 1895 it was burned to the ground; and that the present house was erected in 1895, with Sunday school additions built on in June, 1917? That - In the last FIVE AND A HALF years, the Church has been painted two coats on the outside; all woodwork inside varnished; the ceiling and side walls renovated with celotex? Electric lights have been installed; part of the dirt removed from under the church auditorium, with a rock wall built under and the floor cemented? And that the basement under the Sunday school addition has been partitioned off, sealed, and floored? Also four dozen folding chairs furnished? That - The once muddy parking ground has been covered with 40 or more loads of red-dog; and the bank in front of both church and parsonage planted with "Barbarie bushes"? That - The ladies of the church have purchased and installed a large outside BULLETIN BOARD, with changeable aluminum letters, all electrically lighted? That - Three-quarters of an acre or more of ground adjoining the church has been purchased; the old house on the property renovated into a new one that is modernly equipped with running water, bath, gas, furnace, and electricity? And that a two-car garage now stands where the old barn used to stand? And that all buildings have been painted white and trimmed in black? That - The total cost of all improvements has exceeded in actual money more than $5,000.00, with perhaps another $2,000.00 in the form of voluntary work and donations? And that every cent has been paid for, without resorting to (bake sales, church suppers, etc.) and yet we have some money left in all treasuries? May we thank and praise our Heavenly Father for such achievements? Do you ask: "How could you do it?" Perhaps the following illustration may suggest an answer! Was it not because we gave the LORD A SQUARE DEAL? One lone tater out of ten! My goodness, how can a man be mean enough to give less? (There is a cartoon of a mean looking man wearing a sign "My Own" and he's holding 10 potatoes - on the table beside him there is one potato with a sign "The Lord's".) Study This Picture Missionary Department Mrs. Carman Bowser is well pleased with the way folks are increasing their Missionary giving, and as treasurer and superintendent of that department, she THANKS YOU! Sunday School - is for YOU and for YOUR BENEFIT! Are you taking advantage of it? Your superintendent, Howard Bowser, invites you to do so. * * * The Cradle Roll - has been one of the large departments of our Sunday school. There has been from 50 to 65 babies on the roll each year. According to Mrs. Laura J. Wyant, our superintendent, there are now 62 babies enrolled. (Picture of son in jail and father comes to visit) Father - My boy, why did you disgrace me like this? Maybe I am the one to blame, I should have taken my boy to church regularly. Page 6: SOME THINGS YET TO CHALLENGE US 1. Purchase more "Cemetery ground". 2. Enlarge and cover more of the "Parking Ground" with red-dog. 3. Complete removal of dirt from under the church auditorium and wall-up and cement the floor of same - thus making more Sunday school rooms. (Especially for a Young Married People's Class). 4. Paint or paper the white-plastered parsonage walls. 5. Plant hard-wood maple trees in parsonage grounds, and complete shrubbery decorations in keeping with "State College Landscape Director". 6. Plan for a week of Pre-Easter "Visitation Evangelism". 7. Plan for big Revival in May, when Rev. M.J. Brougher will be with us. 8. Plan for big Fourth-of-July celebration at regular place or with Bro. Frank Younkins, then or at a later date. CENTER HILL WINS IN BIBLE READING CONTEST In the "Bible Reading Contest" put on by the Department of Religious Education of Western Pennsylvania, February 6-June 26, 1938. Our members read the most chapters. One person read the entire Bible through three times; three read it through twice; and nineteen read it through once; while 50 or more read the New Testament through one or more times. OUR NEW SECRETARY OF THE MEN'S BROTHERHOOD, HOWARD HINDERLITER, REPORTS: That - Our organization started November 24, 1936, with 13 members, and has held to date 46 monthly meetings, with a present enrollment of 36 men. That - We meet regularly each month on the third Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., with the next meeting in the home of Mrs. John A. Bowser. And that at it, and every other meeting, the ladies are also invited. That - Our annual banquet will be held February 18, and will be open to any man or lady. (If reservations are made two weeks in advance) Price, 50 cents per plate. Ideals are like stars; you will not succeed in touching them with your hand, but like the seafaring man on the desert of waters, you choose them as your guides, and, following them, you reach your destiny. - Carl Schurz SUNDAY SCHOOL What Our Sunday School Is For 1 - To educate us in order that we may understand and contribute to the great work of our church. We therefore pledge ourselves: 2 - To join in our church services of worship and inspiration, and to practice with our own church group the Christian's virtues of sympathy, kindness, forbearance, tolerance, service. 3 - To utilize every moment of our brief time together in the church school in developing our-selves as vital agents in our great church cause. Therefore we will be on time; in our places; helpful to one another, especially to strangers; joint heartily in our services of inspiration and praise; practice orderly behavior and assembling, going to and from classes; and be generally helpful to every effort of our school in its work and procedure and worship. We further will engage ourselves in earnest study of the life and principles of Jesus, our great leader and friend; of the whole Bible; of the history of the church in its struggle for righteousness; of the church's effort to teach Jesus' way of living to mankind through missions, educational, medical evangelistic; of science and every helpful discovery that may aid all people in their quest for the best. 4 - To practice the "Jesus Way" in our home and home relations. We therefore engage to make the home happy and beautiful; to perform efficiently and with dispatch more than our rightful share of the home duties; to learn how to do the things essential in a home in order to contribute through the home to the program of our church in building the democracy of God in our world. 5 - To worthily support our church and all good people in their effort to make the community a good and safe place for all to live in; cheerfully and energetically to perform the duties of a member of the community, state and nation whose privileges we accept and respect. WHAT MAKES THE CHURCH WEAK? 1 - A non-missionary spirit church. 2 - A minister with no program. 3 - A gossiping, fault-finding congregation. 4 - Pessimistic officials. 5 - A church run by some one person with a "rule or ruin" disposition. 6 - Where everything in the church is done by the same two or three people. 7 - A church that pays little, talks a lot and does nothing worth while. 8 - A church that gets in the rut and stays there and is afraid to try anything new. 9 - None of the members tithe. 10 - Poor music and no leader. 11 - Always start the church and Sunday school late. 12 - Have nothing in a social way for the members. 13 - Never see the strangers, but visit with own people. 14 - Are content, and have no craving for souls, and are spiritually dead. 15 - Dirt and dust everywhere; no pain, poor light, and not much fire. If you are not contributing toward the church, someone else must do it for you. * * * ANNUAL CONFERENCE ACTION CONCERNING ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP 1st. An active member is one what avails himself of the public means of grace by attending services, or communion services, or contributing to the support of the church and its various enterprises in such a way as he is able. 2nd. Concerning INACTIVE members the decision is: "Any member who without sufficient reason shall fail to comply with the requirements for active membership for two consecutive years, after earnest, but ineffective effort by the church to arouse the member to the observance of his vows, may, by action of the membership committee, be recorded in a separate list as INACTIVE, until such time as he again shall become active."
