Sprague, Clerk, Book E, Vol. 5, Page 64 (Images 29-30) State of Pennsylvania Armstrong County On the nineteenth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty three, personally appeared in open court before John Young, Esquire, resident Robert Orr, Jr., Joseph Rankin, Esquire associate Judges of the Court of Common Pleas for Armstrong now sitting, Jacob Wolf, a resident of Sugarcreek Township Armstrong County, Pennsylvania aged 79 years 11 months & 14 days, who being duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed in June 1832. That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officer and served as herein stated, that he entered under Captain John Santee in the month of March A.D. 1776 in the service known by the name of the "Flying Camp" at Easton in the County of Northampton, first Lieutenant John Ludwick and was stationed sometime in Easton, that from Easton then were marched over the River Delaware into New Jersey toward fort Washington that when they came near to fort Washington they received news that the Flying Camp or the main body of it was taken at fort Washington sometime in September or November in the same year when they were marched to Easton and there discharged about the last of September or November in the same year, which discharge he has since lost. His answer to the interrogations directed to be put by the War Department are as follows: To the 1st that he was born in Northampton County Penna on the 4th of April 1753 2nd, He has his age recorded in his father's bible now in his possession 3rd, He lived previous to his service in Northampton County, where he lived until 1789 when he moved to Westmoreland County & moved from there to where he now resides in 1794. To the 4th, that he was a volunteer. 5th, Was not joined with any regular troops (and that from falure [sic] of memory) he cannot state the circumstances of his service more fully than he has already done in this declaration. 6th, That he received a discharge from Captain John Santee and signed by him, which has been lost or destroyed. 7th, To the Reverend G. A. Reichart, Jonathan King and Jonathan King the last named of whom was with him during his service. He hereby relinquishes every claim whichever to a pension except once declare that his name is not one the pension roll of any state, that on account of losses he received from (by a _____ of the general assembly) the State of Pennsylvania a gratuity of $40 per annum. Reichert a clergyman residing in the Borough of Kittanning, Armstrong County, Penna, and Jonathan King residing in Sugarcreek Township in said county, do hereby certify that we are well acquainted with Jacob Wolf who has subscribed & sworn the above declaration that we believe him to be at least 79 years of age, that he is _______ and believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a soldier in the revolution and we concur in that opinion. Reichert Jonathan King Sworn & subscribed the day & year aforesaid.... and the said courts do hereby declare their opinion, after the investigation of the matter, and after putting the interrogations presented by the War Department that the above named applicant was a revolutionary soldier, and served as he states. And the court further certifies that it appears to them that..... (Image 31) Statement from the War Department, Pension Office Sir: The evidence in support of your claim, under the act of June 7, 1832, has been examined, and the papers are herewith returned. The following is a statement of your case in tabular form. On comparing these papers with the following rules, and the subjoined notes, you will readily perceive that objections exist, which must be removed, before a pension can be allowed. The notes and regulations will show what is necessary to be done. These points to which your attentions is more particularly directed, you will find marked in the margin with a brace (thus }). You will, when you return your papers to this Department, send this printed letter with them; and you will, by complying with this request, greatly facilitate the investigation of your claim.
