Shumaker, wife of the late Ross Shumaker died in the Kittanning hospital Wednesday evening, April 9, 1941 at 11:24 o’clock, aged 84 years. Her death was attributed to a fall which occurred six weeks ago in which she fractured her hip and arm, while she was visiting relatives in Sigel. She was born August 20, 1856, near Ringgold, Jefferson county, a daughter of John C. and Letitia Reed Maurer. Mrs. Shumaker resided all her life in Mahoning township on the farm where she began housekeeping, excepting the last two winters spent with her two daughters in Kittanning, Mrs. J. W. Sullivan and Miss Edna T. Shumaker. She was united in marriage to Ross Shumaker in 1879. He preceded her in death a number of years ago. Those surviving are her two daughters, Mrs. J. W. Sullivan and Miss Edna Shumaker, who so faithfully gave the most thoughtful consideration and tender care that devoted hearts and hands could give to a devoted mother; also two granddaughters, Mrs. Wilmer Miller of Sigel and Mrs. William A. Lyons of Durham New Hampshire; two great grandchildren, Betty Lou and Donald Miller; two sisters and two brothers, and a host of relatives and friends. At an early age she united with the Church of Brethren, of which she remained a faithful member until the time of her death. She was removed to her farm home where she lay amid many beautiful floral tributes which showed the esteem in which she was held. Funeral services were conducted from the Oakdale Church of the Brethren April 12, at 2:30 p.m. by her form pastor, Rev. J. H. Wimmer of Champion, Pa. He spoke so fittingly of her love for her Master and for others which was always expressed in sacrificial service and devotion to her home, family, church and community. Her host of friends will miss her wise counsel, her pleasing personality, and her cheerful and lovable disposition. Three of her favorite hymns: “Nearer My God To Thee", “Face to Face", and “Abide With Me,” were sung by the quartette consisting of Ruth and Grace Nelson, Mr. Florence Smullen, and G.I. Troutman, accompanied by Miss Nellie Putney. Thus closes the earthly career of a Christian Mother, who rests from her labors, but her works do follow her. Her life unfolds in all its richness, completeness and perfection as she goes to her eternal home. She was laid to rest in the family burial plot in the Distant cemetery under the direction of Mortician Robert Mateer. God’s Heaven must be beautiful, The ones we love the best Are called so soon to be a part Of that fair land of rest. May all find comfort in the thought That those we love now wait, For us where Almost all is peace and joy, Beyond the golden gate.
