Started from York County, PA and marched from thence to Philadelphia, and from Philadelphia to Princeton. Remained about 4 months within service as a volunteer militia man in the vicinity of New York, and was stationed at a small town called Bergen, where he left the volunteer militia and joined the Flying Camp under Captain John Laird in the regiment commanded by Colonel McAllister." " That he served in the Flying Camp about 4 months. He was never in any regular battle, but was where there was some skirmishing. Was marched to go to the Battle of Long Island, but the American army was defeated a short time before the detachment to which he belonged reached there. That he was 1st sergeant of both companies to which he belonged. From his very advanced age, infirmity of body and imperfection of memory, that he cannot now recollect the details and particulars of his service, of which he never kept any record. Interrogatories: " I was born in Ireland, I think in the year 1751. Never kept any record of my age." " I came to the United States some time prior to the Revolutionary War, went into service from York County, PA. After I left the service I lived in Philadelphia. Was employed as a teacher in the college there, 8 years, moved thence to Washington, PA, taught in the academy there 2 years, from thence I removed to Canonsburg, PA and taught in what is called Jefferson College for 8 years; from thence removed to Charleston (now called Wellsburg) Virginia, taught there for 3 or 4 years; and from thence removed to the town of Beaver, in which I now live and where I have resided for about 28 years." " I received a discharge from Colonel McAllister, being then very sick. The discharge, I know not what become of it, never thinking it would be of any service to me." Beaver County, PA, September 6th, 1838, Catherine Johnston, aged about 74 years: " That she is the widow of David Johnston, Esquire, who was a sergeant in the War of the Revolution. That he served in Captains William Ross and Laird's company and that he received a pension of 40 dollars per annum..." " She further declares that she was married to the said David Johnston, Esq. on the 8th day of May, 1785, by the Rev. David Duffield. That she had a certificate of her marriage, but that it is lost or mislaid... That her said husband died on the 6th day of March, 1837..." Beaver County, PA, September 22, 1838, James Allison and William Clark, esquires: " That they were both personally acquainted with David Johnston, deceased and Catherine, his wife, in the fall of 1789. At that time, they were living and cohabiting together as man and wife, and generally respected as such, and had one child living at that time. That they knew them ever since, up to the death of the said David, which is about 18 months since. That they were always reputed to be man and wife and sustained an excellent character and raised a numerous family of children..."
