Transaction of 10 September 1774. Deed. James Daily of Dublin Township, Bedford County, to John LATTA of the same place. Land: An improvement tract of land with a location for 300 acres. 100 therof surveyed, situated in Dublin Township on the waters of Aughwick Creek, bounded on the south by Sugar Run, on the west by lands of Samuel Daniel, and on east by a scruby ridge. Price 55 pounds Pa currency. Witnesses: Robert Clugage and Robert Shirophire. (Source Deed Abstracts, Deed Book A, page 84, Bedford County. In the History of Huntingdon and Blair County by Africa 1883; Page 6, Officers of the Townships of Bedford County that covered the present territory of Huntingdon and Blair, appointed by the Court of Quarter Sessions were as follows; 1774 July session: John Latta Dublin Township, Pennsylvania. 1775 Private sessions, March 25; John Latta (Dublin Township constables; Records fail to give an account of the erection of Shirley township, which was formed from Dublin about the date 1779-1780. The earliest assessment of this township was made in 1780, and of Huntingdon in 1781. In the act of the 13th day of September 1785 the Fifth election district made was the townships of Dublin and Shirley, at the house of George Cluggage, in Shirley. Bedford Co. to the Hon. the Executive Counsel, now held in Lancaster these are to certify that by a number of freeholders of Bedford Co. Dublin Tp. James Carmichael was duly elected and chosen a candidate for said Township as a Justice of the Peace. Witness our hands this 11th day of May, 1778. P. The formation of Huntingdon out of Bedford County in 1787 and Shirley Township out of Dublin Township about 1780-1783. John Latta was moved from Bedford County to Huntingdon County and Dublin Township to Shirley Township without physically moving or relocating. John is listed in 1773 in Brothers Valley Twp, Bedford Co., then in 1774 and 1775 as Dublin Twp (constable) in Bedford Co. Pennsylvania Archives. Vol. 11, p. 16. John Latta is on the Tax List for Dublin Township, Pennsylvania in 1774 with a tax amount 2.9. 1775 John Latta tax paid was 4.2 and he was on an Inmate list, being a renter. 1776 John Latta tax was 1.6. 1779 John Latta was taxed for one horse and two cows and one hundred acres of land. 1780 John Latta was relocated when the new Township of Shirley was formed from Dublin Township. The tax rolls now were recorded in Sherley Township or Shirley Township. 1783 Lata, John is taxed on the ownership of two horses, three cows, four sheep and one hundred acres of land for the total tax sum of 1.10.0 1784 Shirley Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania Census John Latta is listed as not owning land. But has a dwelling and 40 whites. This is believed to have been an error in reading and since the normal accounting of most large families is 13, 14, and 15 it probably should have read four or ten. Eight children plus their mother and father. 1787 Huntingdon County was formed out of the County of Bedford. 1788 John Latta has once again been relocated without ever moving with the formation of Huntingdon County out of Bedford County. He is still in Shirley Township but now of Huntingdon County. He is recorded on the tax list as owning two hundred acres, two horses, one cow and paying 7.11 in taxes, also Ditto for Landlord, he also rented land and had paid his landlords taxes on 58 acres for 3.6 taxes. 1789 John Latta was listed with 150 acres one horse and no cows. 1790 John Latta was listed with 150 acres. 1790 Census John Latta is shown with nine children; two sons over 16, one son under 16 and six daughters. 1791 John Latta 150 acres. 1792 John Latta 150 acres. 1793 John Latta 150 acres plus 200 acres were added. 1794 John Latta 150 plus the 200 acres. 1795 John Latta 150 plus 200 acres. 1795 TAX LIST Shirley Township, Huntingdon County LATTA, John: 200 acres; 2 horses; 2 cows. 1796 John Latta 150 plus 200 acres. 1797 John Latta 200 acres plus 150. 1798 John Latta 200 acres plus 150. 1799 John Latta 200 acres plus 150. 1800 John Latta 200 acres plus 150. 1800 Census page 133,Shirley Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania; John Latta is head of Family a male 45 plus; other Free white males are; two sons under 10 John Jr and Abraham; Free white females, one daughter under 10,one daughter 10 -16, and three daughters 16-26 and his wife one female over 45 plus. John would have been at least 48 years of age here. 1800 Census Page 134 Shirley Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania; William Latta, son of John Latta Sr., William is between 26 and 45 years old and has one male child under 10; His wife is between 26 and 45 also. They have two daughters under 10; Living beside him is James McPherson a young man also 26 to 45 with a female child under 10 and a wife between 16 and 26; and beside the McPhersons is John Morgan who is Rebecca Morgans father who is over 45+ and one male 26 to 45 is also listed. A female 16-26 and Johns wife is 45+. 1801 John Latta 200 acres plus 150. After 1801 the 200 acres for John Latta disappears. By this time five children born to John and his wife has left home. There would have been at least 13 children born to this couple for Rachel was born in 1801. In 1802 a different listing starts for John Latta. No acres, three horses, one cow, and ditto for landlord. This listing continues unchanged, except for the number of cows form 1802 through 1805. 1807 John Latta is listed with only 1 horse and 2 cows. 1809 John Latta is listed with 275 acres, six horses and two cows. 1810 John Latta now has one horse and one cow. 1810 Roll M252-51 Federal Census Shirley Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania; page 17; line 18 J. Latta; only two males are listed between 16 and 26; This is probably John Jr. and Abraham; there is one older male 45 plus John Sr. no other males listed here. There is one female under the age of 10 and one female 16-26. The child under 10 may be Rachel Latta; or a child of Jr's or Abrahams.
