At the time of writing, John Gunnell's parents have not been established. The John Gunnell of the pension documents is assumed to be the same as the Jonathan Gunnell who appears in various records at other times and locations. From various documents, it appears John Gunnell migrated from Loudoun County, Virginia sometime between 1787 and 1800 (according to the 1800 PA Census and the 1787 VA Tax Lists for Loudoun) with his wife and children. He migrated from Bedford to Westmoreland by 1827 (according to the pension documents). A will of a Jonathan Gunnell (also Gunel in the text) appears probated in Westmoreland, County, Pa in 1847. A historical marker at Sewickly Baptist Church, on Old Stone Church Road, near Youngwood, states "Jonathan Gunnell, Revolutionary Soldier, Capt. John Linton's Co., Col. Washington's Virginia Regiment, Enlisted 1780, Died about 1850, Parmelia." The information for this modern marker may have been obtained from DAR records. This does not confirm the connection, since the submitters were likely using the same pension documents to make the connection and a note appears in John Gunnell's pension file suggesting it was accessed by the DAR submitter, probably from the Gunnell-Simpson family. A record is also found in Patricia Hatcher, Graves of Revolutionary Patriots: Jonathan Gunnell bur. Big Sewickly Baptist Church, Youngwood, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. A Jonathan Gunnell also appears in the census of pensioners for revolutionary or military services made in 1840, living in Pennsylvania, Western District, Westmoreland County, Hempfield, Jonathan Gunnell, aged 84. The justification for merging John Gunnell with Jonathan Gunnell and family mentioned in his will as well as other documents is too complex for an in depth analysis here.
