May 3, 1861 James Hughes Accidental Death On Thursday the 11th inst., James Hughes, residing on the farm or Wm. Hull, in Napier Township, went out for the purpose of cutting rail timber. The tree which he was felling split when partially cut down, and struck him and fractured his neck, which, it is supposed, caused instant death. A jury was summoned by John W. Hull, who, together with Dr. Ely, of Schellsburg examined the body, and rendered their verdict as above. He was a poor man, a day laborer, and has left a wife and four children, the youngest about two weeks old to mourn his loss. There is no certainty about his age, but he was supposed to be about fifty years. Truly "in the midst of life we are in death." B. W. J.
