Bennett, 1905: Hyndman, Bedford County, PA SAMUEL J. BENNETT His obituary in a local Hyndman PA paper [1905] states: "Word was received here by telegram Sunday noon that Mr. Samuel J. Bennett had died in a hospital in Harrisburg, Saturday, Sept. 16 [1905]. His remains were brought here on the Pennsylvania train Monday evening and taken to his home on Water street. The funeral services were held in the M.E. Church Wednesday morning at 10:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. D. A. Ford, a former pastor of Mr. B's, assisted by Rev J. W. H. Beale. Interment in the Hyndman Cemetery. He was born in Frederick Co. Md., Nov. 18, 1837. He was the only boy in a family of eight children as follows: Mrs. Julia Keyes, deceased; Ms. Mary Metcalf and Mrs. Lydia Trainer of Tyrone, Pa; Mrs. Maggie Haller of Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Lucy Chapman of Darkville W.Va., Mrs. Nellie Humrichhouse and Mrs. Hattie _______, of Shepherdstown, W.Va. He was married three times, his first wife being Caroline Scott. This union was blest by seven children, Margaret J., Sarah Agnes, John A., Ada K., Lillie L., deceased, Anna Lula, wife of Philip McElfish and Mary Alice, wife of Lemuel Roberts of Cumberland, Md. His second wife, Mary Bohnert of Cumberland, Md., to which union there were no children born. His third wife, Amanda Steckman and son William, live in Hyndman. Two other children were born to this union but died in infancy. He has also fifteen grandchildren living. Mr. Bennett was a man of exemplary character, a consistent member of the M. E. Church, having united with it in his youth. He was employed by the U.S. Leather Co. at Flintstone for a number of years, resigning the position, he came to this place and was employed by the Elk Tanning Co. Altogether he worked at the tanning business for 44 years, 23 years of which he was employed as night watchman. This an enviable record for a man to hold and it shows in what . . ."
