All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/bedford/ _______________________________________________ FRANK CORBOY, STAR ATHLETE, DIES IN SOUTH An outstanding athlete in Altoona and vicinity and also in college circles a number of years ago, Frank Bradshaw Corboy, aged 60, or Orlando, Fla., died Sunday morning in a veteran's hospital at Orlando, according to work received by a brother, John R. Corboy, of 401 Cherry avenue. Mr. Corboy will be buried Tuesday at Orlando and the Altoona brother and his family left Sunday for Florida. Frank Corboy, known as Red, was Altoona's top athlete for many years and he was an all-around performer in baseball, football and basketball. He starred at Altoona High prior to his graduation in 1909 and played in sports for the University of West Virginia, University of Pittsburgh and Muhlenberg, graduating at the latter school in 1914. Mr. Corboy was a performer on the Juniata and South Altoona Pennsylvania railroad baseball league teams and was with the Osgoods and Tyrone teams in football. He coached athletics for a time at Elon college, in North Carolina. He organized various sport teams and was the first to operate a Pennsylvania railroad Apprentice team in this area. Mr. Corboy served in both World wars. He was with the 28th division in World war I, serving overseas, and he was with the Red Cross in World war II. He was disabled and was hospitalized from time to time, his last illness sending him to the Orlando Veterans' hospital. He was employed at Orlando as an automobile distributor. Mr. Corboy was born in Bedford Aug. 22, 1888, a son of John R. and Alice (Stern) Corboy, and resided in Altoona during his early life. He was married to Miss Mary Sellers of Wilkinsburg, who survives, together with a brother, John R. Corboy of Altoona. Another brother, Ralph, died in 1923. Hand-dated d. 3/21/1948.
