Death of a Newspaper Man at His Home in Bedford. At ten minutes of 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon Mr. John G. Fisher died at his home in Bedford at the age of 63 years. He was the father of A. S. Fisher, esq., and W. H. Fisher, of this city. At times during the past few years he made his home in Altoona, and here, as elsewhere, he had many friends. The deceased was born in Berlin, Somerset county, but upon reaching his majority went to Bedford where his bent and inclination was followed, and he entered the newspaper profession. All his work in that line was done on the Bedford Gazette, and it was he who, in many ways, laid the plan since carried out therein - or a newspaper and not a journal. He wrote the news without fear or favor, as the same came to him and helped in a great way to make the paper one to be read with interest. While all the news was given by him it was written with no two meanings, and it is doubtful if he now has an enemy. He is survived in addition to the relatives named above by seven brothers: Harry W. Fisher, who is prominent in educational circles in Pittsburg; Philip of California, where as an educator he is well known; Frank, of Philadelphia, and William H., of Easton, both Lutheran ministers; Tobias, of Berlin; Samuel, of Dakota, and Daniel, of Berlin. One sister, Mrs. Rufus Landis, of Berlin, also survives. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fisher, who died at their home in Berlin several years ago. Decedent came to Bedford when a young man. For a number of years, he taught school in this county, at one time being principal of the Boydstown school. He finally forsook the pedagogical path and entered the field of journalism. From 1871 to 1880, he was local editor of the Bedford Gazette and right well did he perform the duties pertaining to the position. He was a trenchant writer, fearless and forceful. Mr. Fisher served as deputy register and recorder for six years and as clerk to the county commissioners for nine years. In politics, he was a Democrat and with pen and voice ably espoused the principles of that party. On the twelfth of May, 1863, he was united in marriage to Miss Martha J. Snively, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Snively, of Schellsburg. To this union three children were born, namely, Andrew S., William II. and Harry. The last named died in Bedford in 1880. Andrew S. is an attorney, and, with his mother and brother, lives in Altoona, to which place the family removed seven or eight years ago. Decedent is also survived by seven brothers and one sister -- Prof. Harry W. Fisher, a prominent educator, of Pittsburg; Prof. Philip Fisher, a well known instructor, of California; Rev.
