M. Griffith's Mother Died Saturday Night and Wife's Mother Yesterday Morning Mrs. Sarah Miller Griffith, widow of John M. Griffith, died at 7:30 o' clock Saturday evening at the home of her son, Scott M. Griffith, 834 Sherman street, this city, and Mrs. S. B. Whetstone, mother of Mrs. Scott M. Griffith, expired at 2 o' clock yesterday morning at her home in Schellsburg, Bedford county. Mrs. Griffith was in her 78th year and Mrs. Whetstone in her 68th. The latter came to Johnstown on Thanksgiving Day and was at the Griffith home until last Tuesday, when she went home by way of Windber, driving overland from there. Mrs. Whetstone took sick the following day. Her condition became critical on Friday and her daughter, Mrs. Scott M. Griffith, was called home on Saturday. Mrs. Sarah Miller Griffith took sick at noon on Friday. Her death occurred during the absence of her daughter-in-law. Both deaths were due to pneumonia. Mrs. Scott M. Griffith has returned to Johnstown to attend the funeral of her mother-in-law, the services to be held at 2 o' clock tomorrow afternoon at the Griffith home by the Rev. J. Lane Miller, pastor of the Franklin-street Methodist Episcopal Church, of which the deceased was a member. Burial will be made in Grandview Cemetery. Immediately following the funeral Mr. and Mrs. Scott M. Griffith and the others will go to Schellsburg to attend the funeral of Mrs. Whetstone on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Whetstone was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Schellsburg. Sarah Miller was the daughter of John and Sarah Miller Miller and was born on November 20, 1840, near Fishertown, Bedford County. Her parents died in Bedford County many years ago. She was one of a family of ten children, three daughters and seven sons, and is the seventh of the number to pass away. The surviving brothers are Charles and Thomas Miller of Fishertown, and Armstrong Miller of Pleasantville, Bedford County. Sarah Miller and John M. Griffith were married at the Miller home near Fishertown shortly before the Civil War, removing to Altoona in 1900 and to this city in 1901. From 1910 to 1912 they made their home at Atoka, Okla. Mr. Griffith' s death occurred in Moxham in December, 1912, three months after his return from the West. He served in the Civil War in a Bedford County company. Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Griffith, two of them are dead-Miss Sarah Griffith and Clarence Griffith, the former in Blair County and the latter in Bedford County. The surviving are Joseph Grant Griffith, of Altoona; Ella, wife of H. C. Hull, of Limespring, Ia.; Jennie, wife of Charles W. Crofford, of Akron, O.; John R. Griffith, of 301 Grove avenue, Moxham; Statler M. Griffith, of Atoka, Okla.; Matilda, wife of Ralph E. Caspari, of Akron, O.; Scott M. Griffith, of 824 Sherman street, and Miss Gertrude Griffith, also of 824 Sherman street. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, the later being residents of Altoona. Mrs. Whetstone is survived by her husband and three children-Mrs. Griffith, mentioned above; Miss Edith Whetstone, of Schellsburg, and Edna, who recently married Frank Bruchner, of the Twenty-first Ward, this city. Besides these, Mrs. Whetstone is survived by seven grandchildren, a brother, Elwood Smith, of St. Louis, and two sisters, Mrs. Eliza Westlake, and Miss Catherine Smith, both residing the State of Florida.
