He was the son of Henry and Rachel Kauffman, deceased. He was one of a family of eight- five brothers and three sisters- three of whom preceded him to the grave. He worked on his father's farm till twenty-nine years of age, when he was married to Esther Weyant and soon after moved to the place of his late residence. He followed the avocation of a farmer all his life. He was the father of eleven children, viz., Calvin A. and David L., of near Imler; Mary J., wife of J. A. Imler, of Imler; W. Birdine, Sarah A., wife of A. G. Stufft and Cyrus E., of Ridgely, Md.; Shannon G., of Osterburg; Sherman S., Katie A., deceased and George F. and Effie R., at home. He died November 27, 1899, aged seventy five years, three months and fifteen days. His body was laid to rest in the Union cemetery at Imlertown November 30. Services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. Parson, assisted by Rev. Cromer. Mr. Kauffman was a life long member of the Lutheran church and was ever ready to do his aprt in all good works.
