Reed WELL KNOWN ATTORNEY OF PHILADELPHIA DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS. Joseph. A. Reed, a well known attorney of Philadelphia and a native of this County, died on December 22nd at his home, 320 Gowen Ave., Mt. Airy, after an illness lasting several years. Funeral services were held at his late residence on Friday afternoon, December 26th, at 3 o'clock and were conducted by Rev. James Crawford, D. D., Pastor Emeritus, and Rev. Eugene L. McLean, Pastor of Christ Reformed church, Philadelphia. Interment was made in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Germantown. Mr. Reed was a son of the late John P. Reed of Bedford, and was always a steadfast Democrat in politics having inherited the party's principles from his father, who was a leader of that party for many years in Bedford County. In earlier years, he was active in Democratic politics in Philadelphia and on several occasions ran for office, always polling a heavier vote than the rest of the Democratic ticket on which he was slated. He was born in Schellsburg, this County, on July 9th, 1847 and received his early education in the schools of Bedford and at Mercersburg, afterward graduating from Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, Pa. He studied law at Columbia Law School, New York and was admitted to the New York Bar in 1873. In 1877, he removed to Philadelphia and was admitted to practice before the Philadelphia and Pennsylvania Courts, where he continued the active practice of his profession until 1916, when illness compelled him to abandon it. Mr. Reed attended Christ Reformed Church, Philadelphia, where for forty years he was a member of the Consistory of that church. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the Revolution and of the Pennsylvania State Bar Association. In 1873, he married Miss Leila J. Wentz, of Lancaster, who survives him. He is also survived by three daughters: Lelia, Josephine, and Lucinda W., and a son, Clarence H. Reed. Paul Reed, of Bedford and George W. Reed of Media, Pa., are surviving brothers.
