All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/bedford/ ________________________________________________ Altoona Mirror, 9/16/1959 A 66-year-old Saxton woman was injured fatally about 5:55 o'clock last evening in a two-car head-on collision on Route 220 about one-half mile south of Bedford. Alice Virginia Rhodes was born on April 27, 1893 in Monroe Township, Clearville, R.D.2, Bedford County, a daughter of Monroe and Mary Jane (Miller) Hanks. She was twice married. Her first husband, Russell A. Smith preceded her in death in August, 1952. She later married Milton G. Rhodes who survives. She was a member of the Raven Run Church of the Brethern. In addition to her husband, she is survived by these four children of the first marriage: Mrs. Robert (Edith) Workman and Mrs. Earl (Ethel) Hinish both of Saxton; Guy W. Smith of Fairless Hills and Fred H. Smith of Johnstown, R.D.2. Fifteen grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and these 11 step children also survive: Marvin Rhodes of Tyrone, Miss Ruth Rhodes of Saxton, Mrs. Donald Wingate of Huntingdon, Mrs. Loraine Black of Fairless Hill, Mrs. Doris Hawn of Bellefonte, Jack Rhodes of Saxton, Harold Rhodes of Masontown, Mrs. Lester Black of Akron, Ohio, Miss Jean Rhodes of Morgantown, W.V. and Daniel Rhodes of Huntingdon, R.D.. There are also 20 step grandchildren and 12 step great grandchildren. Three sisters also survive: Mrs. Myrtle Akers, Roanoke, Va., Mrs. Bertha Claybaugh, North Lima, Ohio and Mrs. Mary Weimer, Poland, Ohio. Five brothers and one sister preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m. at the Raven Run Church of the Brethern. The Rev. Percy Kegarise, pastor of the church will officiate and internment will be made in St. Luke's Cemetery, Saxton, R.D. Friends will be received at the Masood funeral chapel at Saxton after 5 p.m., Friday, and until 10 a.m. Saturday when the body will be taken to the church where it will lie in state from 11 a.m. until the hour for the service.
