Shaffer, lifelong resident of Osterburg and merchant in that town for the past 50 years, died at his home yesterday noon. He was born in Osterburg March 23, 1879, the son of the late David and Sarah (Oster) Shaffer. He received his education in the Bedford schools and the Altoona School of Commerce. Mr. Shaffer was the last of the original founders of the First National Bank of Claysburg and was a member of that institution's directorate, also serving as vice president of the bank. He was a member of the Trinity Evangelical and Reformed church of Osterburg, having served many years on the official board. Mr. Shaffer was a member of the Odd Fellows of St. Clairsville and the Knights of the Golden Eagle of Osterburg. Mr. Shaffer was married to Miss Jessie Kauffman, daughter of the late Frank and Laura (Wisegarver) Kauffman of St. Clairsville. Surviving are his wife and the following children: Helen, wife of Dr. John Sheaffer of New Holland, and Charles Shaffer, jr. One son preceded him in death. Two grandchildren also survive. Brenda and John Sheaffer of New Holland, along with one sister, Mrs. D. Bertha Smith of New Holland. Friends will be received at the home.
