Smith, a well known citizen of Woodbury, died there on Monday, aged 76 years, 8 months and 17 days. He was born at Waterside March 29, 1842. Mr. Smith was united in marriage to Catherine Potter and to this union five children were born, namely: Mrs. J. M. Henry and Mrs. Frank Bulger, of Woodbury; Lewis Smith, of Martinsburg; Harry Smith, of Johnstown, and John Smith of Chester county. His wife died in 1909. Eighteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive. Under the ministry of Rev. Dutt, he united with the Lutheran church and was a useful and devout Christian at Woodbury. At the time of his death he was also Burgess of the Borough, serving his second term. Josiah N. Smith was a veteran of the Civil war. Entered as Sergeant March 5, 1864, in Company A, 184th regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Was in the battles of the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Hatchet Run, etc., and at the fall of Petersburg April 2, 1865. He witnessed the surrender of Lee April 9, 1865. He was honorably discharged July 14, 1865. Funeral services were held in the Woodbury Lutheran church Wednesday afternoon, his pastor, Rev. C. F. Gephart, officiating. Interment in the Smith burial plot in the Clover Creek cemetery. Martinsburg Herald, Handwritten date of December 20, 1918
