On entry to America his name is recorded as "Andereas Shaad" or 'Andereas Shaadt" (it is unclear due to an ink blot), however it appears that someone else signed his name, as an "X" appears between his first and last name.) Following is from Janet Shade's "The Shade Family" genealogy (published in the 1980's and now out of print): SHIP LIST # 151-C: Penna. Archives, State Library, Harrisburg, Penna. P. 91; List 45.6 AT THE COURT HOUSE AT PHILADELPHIA, TUESDAY 21ST OF AUGUST 1750 PRESENT : Thomas Lawrence, ESQ.,Mayor The forreignors whose names are underwritten imported in the Ship Anderson, Capt. Hugh Campbell from Rotterdam and Cowes in England, did this day take and subscribe ye usual oath to this list includes the name Andereas Schaadt (or Shaad, it's unclear) (Copy of this document in my inventory) (Copy of the Oath taken by Andreas is also in my inventory) His age at the time of his arrival in 1750 has not been established, but one source has him listed as born in Germany in 1725. Record of Reverend John Casper Stoever - Baptismal and Marriage, 1730-1779, printed by the Harrisburg Publishing Company, 1896: p 64: Marriages: "February 10, 1754 ============Andreas Shade marries Maria Elizabeth Krafft of Bern Township." Four years after his arrival in America he married Maria Elizabeth Krafft of Bern TWP, Berks Co. PA. Andreas and Maria lived in Tulpehocken Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania where between 1754 and 1767 they had nine children. Maria probably died before 1771 when Andreas married Marie Eve Ketner who bore him six more children. Andreas and both of his wives are no doubt buried in Berks County, Pennsylvania, but their gravesites have not been located. ============ Land owned by Andreas Shade Andreas must have been a man of some means. The 1779 tax rolls in Berks County listed him as owning 200 acres, 4 horses. 5 cattle, 6 sheep. His tax bill was $1,830 Janet's genealogy indicates that Andreas had 300 acres. I have photocopies of land records for Andreas which indicate the following purchases: 1 - 75 acres (50 in Bern Twp adjoining 25 in Tulpehocken Twp) I have the ORIGINAL indenture dated July 20, 1753 2 - 64 acres "Shady Grove" 20# 17 S 6P date 1759 3 - 20 1/4 acres @5# PER 100 acres 1767 4 - 70 1/4 acres (7# 8S 6P) "Shadow" 1767 I have a copy of the Survey map for these 70 1/4 acres 5 - 40 acres @ 10# per 100 acres I have a copy of Andrew's agreement to purchase these 40 acres contingent upon the Commonwealth's purchase from the indians (NOTE: The name on all of these documents is "Andrew Shade") =============== Revolutionary War Veteran ? >From a note on letter from Pat Bailey : "From DAR Patriot Index Andrew Shade b.c. 1725 d. 9-3-1788 m. 1. Marie Elizabeth Kraft 2. Maria Eve Ketner" This would seem to indicate that Andrew fought in the Revolutionary War. Helene Kline Mooty, R 2 Box 8 Shady Grove Farm, Grundy Center IA 50638 in handwritten document dated 8/6/1983 indicates "Andreas Schat "Revolutionary War Patriot" married Maria Eva Ketner. =======Will of Andreas Shade posted on USGenWeb Archives "Wills" page
