Scheidt ORIGIN OF SCHEIDT IN BERKS COUNTY, PA. JACOB Scheidt of Maxatawny Township, Pa. and Johan Christian Scheidt of Montgomery County, Pa. are the first early settlers from whom the Scheidt name originates. Johan Christian, born in Germany, has the oldest recorded tombstone with this name in America. JACOB of Kutztown has the oldest recorded tombstone of a Scheidt born in America. The first Scheidt family to permanently settle in the Kutztown area of Berks County was JACOB and Hannah Emerich Scheidt. Burial records of Rev. B.E. Kramlich list JACOB's parents as Christian and Susanna Bauer Scheidt and his birthdate as 26 March 1792. JACOB married Hannah Emerich in 1821. They had three sons and four daughters, thirty-five grandchildren. From JACOB and Hannah descend all the families of this name in the region before 1860. Listed on the estate records following his death in 1867, JACOB's origin is given as Bern Township, Pa. Also included in these records are various spellings of his name such as Shidy, Shietz, Scheide, and Schidyt. In his will written in 1850 he is listed as JACOB Schide. His wife Hannah dies in 1865 and her tombstone is engraved Scheid. When JACOB dies in 1867 his tombstone is engraved Scheidt. From that time on, all his descendants used this name exclusively. In the distribution of JACOB's property in 1867 his heirs include Joseph, Benneville, Henry (Harry), Esther Delp, and Eliza Laub. Each received a sum of $1480.52 from a total estate of $7404.02. Beginning in 1850 there were many immigrant families arriving in the United States using the Scheidt variation in census records. Except for Johan Christian of Montgomery, who had his tombstone engraved Scheidt, all other Pennsylvania-born families used other variations in census records. Mostly Shade and Scheid, except for JACOB's family. Included in the burial record by Rev. B.E. Kramlich in 1867, is a baptism sponsor by the name of Jacob Schaeffer. He was the son of Peter Schaeffer 1744- 1781 of Richmond Township. This Jacob and his four brothers move to Montgomery County in the same area as Johan Christian-1735 and his family. Jacob Schaeffer also appears as a sponsor for a baptism of a child to George Scheid, son of Johan Christian. Jacob must be a friend of Johan Christian's son Christian, father of Jacob-1792. Johan Christian Scheidt came to America in 1754 on ship "Snow Good Intent". He served as a quartermaster in the Revolutionary War during 1777 and 1778. He settled in the Goshenhoppen area of Montgomery County, now known as Bally, Pa. He spent the remainder of his life there. He was a very wealthy and esteemed citizen and one of the first commissioners of that region. He was also a church elder at the Goshenhoppen Church for many years. He had six sons and four daughters. One son Christian-1764 very likely the father of JACOB-1792. At this church there are birth records of Susanna Bauer, daughter of Abraham. The name Susanna Bauer is given as JACOB's mother. Johan Christian Scheidt married Marie Elizabeth Meu at the Old Goshenhoppen Church in 1759. This is the first record of Johan Christian at this church and his name was written Scheit. All other records from then on were Scheid. All records of this church can be found in the book by W.J. Hinke "A History Of The Old Goshenhoppen Charge, Montgomery County", which was transcribed from the original German record. After the death of Marie Elizabeth Johan Christian remarries Barbara Faber, widow of Rev. Theobald Faber of this church. Johan dies in 1821 and his tombstone is engraved Scheidt. Except for the burial record of Jacob by Rev. B.E. Kramlich in 1867, there is no record at the time of his birth with a date and parents. Christian and Susanna Bauer are given as parents and they are also given as parents in a sourced record for a son Johannes, born in 1796. This record is from Christ Mertz Church in Rockland Township, Pa. There is an 1800 census record of a Christian Sheet with one adult female and two sons under the age of 10 living in Maxatawny Township. In 1810 there is a record of a Susanna Sheid living in Rockland Township, no adult male and two sons the age of JACOB and Johannes. Johannes-1796, does not continue in records in this region after 1810, nor does Christian and Susanna. No burial records could be found for any of these three. There is a baptism record of a Christian Scheidt, father Andreas, at the Blue Mt. Church, Tulpehocken in 1768. This Christian is sometimes given as JACOB's father. But this Christian becomes married to a Maria Elizabetha and they have children with other names the year Johannes and JACOB were born. JACOB-1792 begins to show in Maxatawny census records in 1830, and resides in this area until his death. His born children were Joseph-1821, Benneville-1824, Marri-1826, Esther (Hettie) Delp-1829, Henry-1829, Elizabeth (Eliza) Laub- 1831, Mary-1844. Jacob and Hannah and some of their descendants are buried at the Fairview Cemetery, Kutztown, Pa. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/pafiles/ File size: 5.6 Kb
