It has the unique distinction of calling both Chester and Montgomery Counties its immediate neighbors. Of the four private cemeteries once located in Douglass, only the Fritz Cemetery survives today. The cemetery served the area for at least 116 years according to dates on the headstones. First used as a private family burying place it was later deeded to a group of local residents, who characterized it as a burial place for both Lutherans and Calvinists. The Fritz Cemetery, a secluded piece of Douglass Township history had its last known burial, of Sarah Yorgey, in 1893. In the early 1950s a local news article noted an area child "forced his way through the jungle of growth" to pose for a photo by two of the headstones at the Fritz Cemetery, as part of a Halloween feature article. In 1952 the Boyertown American Legion post undertook the task of cleaning up the cemetery in recognition of the Revolutionary soldiers buried there. In 1962, overgrown once again, as reported in the Pottstown Mercury, Pottstown, Montgomery County, PA the cemetery was "a hotbed of activity as men women and children" completed the clean up task, reclaiming the "resting place for the founding fathers of Douglass township". Shortly there after, a Berks County court ruling granted Douglass Township, at the urging of then president of the township Board of Supervisors, Melvin "Buck" Rhoads, the authority to assume responsibility for upkeep of the Fritz. The Fritz has been kept by the township since then to the present. The Fritz, as it is referred to by locals, was entered on the Pennsylvania Inventory of Historic Places in 1977, maintained by the Pennsylvania Historicaland Museum Commission. It is located within a mile of Route 100 North, between Pottstown and Boyertown and lies within 30 feet of the Berks and Montgomery County lines, where Upper Pottsgrove and Douglass (Berks) meet. Burials came from families living in both counties. Gaining access to the Fritz, is not easy, but worth the effort, especially if you find an ancestor there. The cemetery, according to the Township, is a public site, but holding the line on public access and respect for the surrounding property owners requires constant vigilance. All who visit are asked to do so in as unassuming and respectful manner as possible. Leaving Pottstown take Route 100 traveling North, exit left at the Farmington Avenue off ramp. Bear left onto Evans Road at the first stop sign. The access lane to the Fritz is on the left just past the marked county line, at the Pennsylvania Historic Place marker. The access road is an unnamed public right of way, looking very much like a private drive. Follow the access lane to the end of the dirt portion, and it's a short walk to the cemetery. Parking is tricky as the lane clear must be kept clear and there is no parking lot of any kind. Current tax maps in Berks County, declare the cemetery to be 133' by 167'. In the "Biographical Annals and History of Berks County", Volume I, p. 568, Morton Montgomery in 1909 notes the following about the Fritz Cemetery: "... those residing in Douglass Township [Berks] set apart 85 1/2 perches [about 98'x117']... west of Little Oley for the burial place of Lutherans and Calvinists and the road leading thereto was deeded by John Keely to Henry Yorgey Sr., Jacob Keely Sr, Peter Brunner and John Nagle on Dec. 17, 1790" Why it is called the Fritz is a mystery to the Fritz researchers and many locals. A John Fritz can be noted as the first Fritz ancestor in Douglass (Berks) on the 1759 tax list, but no Fritz family members have been found buried in the cemetery to date. It was believed that an Anna Sophia (Fritz) Romig (b.11-17-1773 d. 3-24-1957) was buried there, however, she and husband Georg Romig (b.1-9-1765 d.4-2-1850) were found interred a few miles away at the old cemetery of St. Paul's Reformed Church at Amityville, Amity Township, Berks County. Local folk lore tells of a John Frtiz, coffin maker who lived adjacent to the cemetery, who was responsible for it being called the Fritz. No ownership by any Fritz families of the adjacent cemetery properties has been found to date, however they could have been tenants on one of them. Another local, Mark Sassaman owned property adjoining the Fritz, from 1855 to his death in 1894. Mark is noted by his descendents as having conducted an undertaking business in his barn. As a matter of coincidence this same Mark Sassaman had a cousin Catharine who married a John Fritz. It remains to be determined whether he was the same John Fritz said to be the coffin maker. At least one early researcher who did a reading and transcription of the headstones referred to the cemetery as the Fritz Cemetery also known as the Gresh Cemetery. In fact there are eleven (11) Gresh burials at the cemetery, interred between 1788 and 1829. Johan George Gresh (b.11-4-1724 d.1-31-1792) who is buried at the Fritz purchased 261.5 acres of land from Thomas Barnard, December 18, 1764. This property was located south east of McCalls Manor [the Pottsgroves] and land of Valentine Keely, and very near the Fritz Cemetery. John Keely, who transferred the cemetery to those mentioned by Montgomery, inherited the farm from his father Valentine Keely in 1788. Valentine bought the property from Derick Cleaver in Decemeber of 1767. Cleaver was also the grandfather to Mary Hatfield wife of John Keely the son of Valentine Keely. In Derick Cleaver's will of February 1768 he mentions a grandaughter Mary Keely who would receive a bequest when she reahed the age of 21. John Keely, son of Valentine married a Mary Hatfield (age 17) on June 2, 1762, at St. Gabriel's Church in Douglassville, Amity Township, Berks County, PA. Mary was the daughter of Martha/Mary Cleaver and Adam Hatfield. Martha/Mary Cleaver was the daughter of Derrick Cleaver and Mary (Potts). There are at least 6 confirmed Revolutionary War Soldiers buried here: (1) Bernhart Honeller/Hornetter (2) Johann Georg Gresch (b.1724 d.1788) (3) Joachim Nagel (b. 1706 d. 1795) (4) Johann Christian Yorge (b.1764 d.11-17-1834) (5) Bernard Fegley (b.1757 d. 1844) (6) Jacob Heppenhaemer (b. 1762 d. 1832). The Berks Historical Cemetery Association lists only one, a John M. Nagel (b.1756 d.1834). These six graves bear Revolutionary Soldier Plaques, sponsored by the Manatawny DAR and placed by the Charles B. Yerger, American Legion Post in Boyertown. Joachim Nagel, buried here, would have been in his 70s at the time of the Revolution. Nagle family records note that Joachim delivered flour to the soldiers at Valley Forge during their encampment there. Once surrounded by a nearly three foot high dry mortar stone wall, the Fritz today has a split rail fence on two sides and only remnants of it's former stone wall foundation are visible. An informal group of friends of the Fritz is being organized and is currently seeking the resources to restore the wall to it's historically correct splendor. Douglass Township is assisting with this endeavor and also the in creating an improvemed access road to the Fritz. The group wishes to hear from anyone who views this list and finds an ancestor among those resting there, as they prepare for a more complete written history of the Fritz Cemetery. Mr. & Mrs. Henry Droege Sr. and son Henry Jr. of Pottstown, PA read, translated, and recorded the headstone inscriptions in 1963. They note the earliest date of birth as that of Joachim Nagle (b.1706 d. 1795). The earliest death date is Maria Catharina Kiele (Keeley) (b. 1763 d.1777) daughter of John Keely. The most recent birth date is Mahelah Kohler (b.1858-1861). The most recent date of death was Sarah wife of George Yorgey (b.1811 d.1893). The headstones are in German and the following is a grave site by grave site comparison of work done by Mr. & Mrs. Droege in 1963 and those of the Berks County Historical Cemetery Association in the 1950's. Mr. & Mrs. Henry Droege Sr. were born and educated in Germany. Their son, Henry Jr., was born in Germany and educated in both Germany and the United States. The names recorded by the Droege translation are printed here in upper case and cemetery association information found on file at the Boyertown Historical Society Library, Boyertown, PA, are below each Droege listing for your comparison. Grave numbers and rows are based primarlily on numerical order and rows noted in the Droeges transcript.
