Scheidt neilain@dejazzd.com ORIGIN OF QUINTER FAMILY IN BERKS COUNTY By Neil D. Scheidt April 12, 2010 The name Quinter does not exist in records in America until 1735 with a marriage of Thomas Quinter to Sarah Warren, in Massachuttes. And not again until Revolutionary War records of Joseph and Jacob, Berks County Pa. volunteers. Although Quinters are of German origin, the name is not found in records of that country. This researcher believes that the name originates from common names in Berks County such as Guinter, Guinther and Kintzer. And these names are a variation of the earliest immigrant, Nicholas Günter. Nicholas Günter arrived in 1730 from Herren Sultzbach, Bayern, and settled in the Tulpehocken region of Berks County. His family became Kintzer. There are further immigration records in 1737 and 1738 of three Jacob Kintzers. The earliest church records of the Quinter surname were at the Schwarzwald Church, Exeter, Berks, Pa. The name appears in early tax records of Amity and Exeter township. In 1791 there is a marriage record of Thomas Quinter of Amity to Susanna Roth. Thomas settles in the Chester County region. In the 1800 U.S. Census, there are five Quinter names in the entire country. Jacob-Union, Berks., Pa; Joseph N.-Hanover, Montgomery, Pa.; Parr-Albany, NY; Peter-Westchester, Pa.; and Thomas-Chester County, Pa. In the 1810 census all Quinters are listed only in Pennsylvania. These include Henry, Jacob, John-Exeter Twp, Berks County; Thomas in Chester County, Pa.
