William1 TALLMAN [34], born 25 Mar 1720 in Portsmouth, Newport, RI; died 13 Feb 1791 in Harrisonburg, Rockingham, VA. He married on 20 Oct 1740 in, Berks, Pa, Anne LINCOLN [35], born 8 Mar 1725 in Chester, Chester, Pa; died 22 Dec 1812 in Harrisonburg, Rockingham, VA, daughter of Mordecai LINCOLN [66] and Hannah SALTER [67] . Notes for William TALLMAN William Tallman son of Benjamin Tallman(2), Peter Tallman (1) and Patience Durfee. William Tallman, and Anne Lincoln their son, Benjamin, married Dinah Boone. Dinah Boone is Daniel Boone's first cousin. (See Chart, page 535 in Spraker's "The Boone Family" BIR:DEA:MAR:Greater Tallman Family Newsletter Summer 1994. BIR:DEA:MAR:Descendants of Peter Tallman by Allen Donald Tallman. Copy in Salt Lake Family History Library. They resided near Reading, then Philadelphia County, Pa. then Berks Co., and had 11 children. By 1776 all of them had died except the eldest, son, Benjamin born 1745. William Tallman listed in the Penn Archives, Third Series, Vol 15. It is well known by Tallman Historians that William Tallman was born in Rhode Island to Benjamin Tallman and Patience Durfee. All of this is based on William Tallman's Bible that has the entree "William Tallman born in Bode Island". This very well could be Rhode Island, but it also could be New Jersey. Which would change the progenitors of William. I have not been able to prove either birth place at this time. So I will go along with the Rhode Island theory until I can prove otherwise, being there are other evidences to lean in that direction. Early in life William left Rhode Island and probably spent some time in Burlington and Monmouth Co., New Jersey with his cousins. He later went to Berks Co., Pa. The records in Rhode Island and Berks county Pennsylvania gave his occupation as a weaver once and as an innkeeper, but usually as a farmer. After he came to Berks County, Pa. he was married to Ann Lincoln on 20 Oct. 1740 or 41. (Incidentally President Abraham Lincoln is a lineal descendent of Ann Lincoln's brother, John Lincoln. John Lincoln was the Great Grand-father to Abraham). Ann was the daughter of Mordecai and Hannah (Salters) Lincoln. The Lincolns came from Hingham, near Warwick, in Norfolk County, Eastern England. Samuel Lincoln, the grand-father of Mordecai Lincoln, came to Salem, Massachusetts in 1637, and later lived in Hingham, Mass. Mordecai Lincoln was an iron founder and came to Monmouth Co., New Jersey. The oldest child, John Lincoln, was a weaver, and William Tallman also worked as a weaver. It is possible that the acquaintance with the Lincolns may have started in Monmouth County, New Jersey, for the Lincoln land in New Jersey was not sold until 1748. It is recorded that Ann Lincoln was a legatee with her sister Sarah, of 100 acres in New Jersey, and that William Tallman and Mary Lincoln, another sister, joined in a deed dated 10 May 1743. William and Ann Tallman were living at Amith, Berks Co., Pa. in 1742, and various deeds recorded in that county prove that they continued to live there until 1779 or 1780. He was taxed as Innkeeper in Reading, the county seat, 1768-1780. In 1781 Ann (Lincoln) Tallman his, wife purchased land in Virginia, in Augusta County, later Rockingham County on Smith's Run at the foot of Massanuter Mtn., settling on a farm near her brother John Lincoln. Toward the close of the War of the Revolution many Berks Co., Pa. families followed their old neighbors, the Boones, Hanks, and Lincolns, who had already migrated to the south and west, and with whom they were more or less closely connected by marriage. Among these the Tallmans, Harrisons, Hentons, Evans, and Morris, Brumfield, and other families went to the Valley of Virginia. New England Historical and Genealogical Register Vol 41 page 157. (page 9 of Vol I of my book of notes) Ann Lincoln daughter of Mordecai and Ann of Amity, married William Tallman and settled near the Lincolns in Virginia. William Tallman his bible bought in 1770 price L 2. 2.6 William Tallman born 25 Mar 1720 on Bode (no doubt Rhode) Island, deceased 13 February (the year obliterated) Ann Tallman daughter of Modie Lincoln in Penn, born March 1725 deceased Dec 22, 1812 William and Ann Tallman married Oct 20 1740. The names of eleven children are given but one of whom lived to the age of maturity. Their son Benjamin Born in Penn. Jan 9, 1745 deceased June 4, 1820, married Dinah Boone, daughter of Benjamin and Susanna Boone, Nov 9, 1764. She was born in Penn, May 10th 1746 died July 28, 1824 A traditional story of two Tallman families that would tend to agree with the Rhode Island birth place for William Tallman 1720-1791. The following story has been past down through the John Tallman Jr. family of Jones County, Iowa, and the photograph referred to in the paragraph below would put some credence to the story. "An interesting anecdote and mystery has come to light concerning the Tallman Farm, Jones County, Iowa, owned by John's son, Wilbur, in 1907 at the time of this story. The John Tallman family were thought to be descendants of Benjamin born 1684 son of Peter Tallman of Rode Island. Cousin Robert S. Tallman of Ortonville Mi writes that his family is descended from James who was born 1689, brother of Benjamin born 1684; sons of Peter Tallman of Rode Island, and his 2nd wife, Joan Briggs. Family activity in his grandfather's day centered around Springfield, Ma. Robert's father at age 13, ran away from home in 1907, working on railroad baggage cars all the way from Mass. to the Iowa farm of "Ellsworth Tallman", as he was known. Robert has a photo of the farm crew lined up in front of an Avery Steam Tractor and Thresher rig including his father, taken 1907 on "Uncle Ellsworth Tallman's" farm. Robert also has an article from "Engineers and Engines" magazine by Harleen Tallman, great granddaughter of Ellsworth Tallman, showing the same Avery farm equipment, and so, made contact with her. The mystery remains: How did Robert's father of Springfield Ma. at age 13 in 1907, know about the Jones Co., Iowa farm of Ellsworth Tallman? Robert has not found any connections between the two families, except the one way back in Rhode Island, ie the two brothers, Benjamin born 1684 and James born 1689, sons of Peter Tallman. This story gives no proof but is very interesting and something to think about. From Ancestral File (TM), data as of 2 January 1996. Anne (Anne Lincoln) so spelled in her father's will, but the Tallman Bible omits the final "e". The dates in this family record are taken from the Tallman Family Bible, in which many of the years are so worn as to be illegible. The record was copied by Miss Mary Josephine Roe of Gilbert, Ohio, a great- great-granddaughter of Anne Lincoln, and is printed in "The Ancestry of Abraham Lincoln," Page 176, born March 8, 1725; died Dec. 22, about 1812, on a farm near Harrisonburg, Virginia. She married Oct. 20, 1740 or 1741 (certainly before Jan. 17, 1742, when her step-mother made William Tallman her attorney, calling him her son-in- law), William, son of Benjamin and Patience (Durfee) Tallman of Warwick, Rhode Island. (The only evidence that William is the son of the above is a statement in the Tallman Family bible that William was born in Bode Island in 1720). born March 25, 1720, at Portsmouth, Rhode Island; died February 13, 1791, in Rockingham county, Virginia. The year is illegible in the Bible, but a deed on record in Berks county, Pa., shows that his will was proved in 1791, in Rockingham county. They were living in 1742, at Amity, and various deeds recorded in Berks county prove that they continued to live in that county until 1780, he being taxed from 1768 to 1780 as an inn-keeper at Reading, whither he had probably removed about the first named date, as in 1770 he deeded his homestead in Amity to his son Benjamin. That he was an inn-keeper before removing to Reading is probable, from his purchase in 1754 from Roger Rogers, his mother-in-law's husband, of what seems to have a country tavern but which he sold in the following year. He probably removed to Virginia in 1780 or 1781, in which latter year his wife purchased land there. They lived on Smith's Run, at the foot of Massanutten mountain, near her brother John. Ref. Pa. Archives, Series 3 Vol. 6, page 314. Also recorded in the Ohio Genealogical Quarterly 4-7 1940-43 Gen R-905. HISTORY:In abt 1779, the Tallman family moved from Berks County, Pa. south to the county of Augusta, Virginia, which became Rockingham County. They settled on Smith's Creek near the town of Harrisonburg. Their homestead at the foot of the Massanutten Mountain was adjoining that of the John Lincoln family who were close kin of the Tallmans. This John Lincoln being the great grandfather of President Abraham Lincoln, was brother of Anne Lincoln Tallman. William and Anne Lincoln Tallman were parents of Benjamin (1745-1820), the Revolutionary soldier who married Dinah Boone. Benjamin Tallman, having served in the Pennsylvania Militia in 1777, reenlisted as a private from Virginia on March 27, 1782 and served in the Fourth Troop of the first Partisan Legion under Col. Charles Armand, Marquiss De La Rouerie. The Fourth Troop was commanded by Cpt. Claudius De Bert. (Ref: Pa. Archives, Series 3, Vol 3, page 152: Series 5, Vol. 3, p. 864 Continental Line, Fifth Pa. Jan 1, 1777-Jan 1, 1783) Benjamin and Dinah Tallman joined the Linville Creek Baptist Church near Harrisonburg, Va. In 1797, Benjamin was a delegate at a meeting in Louden County, of the Ketrockton Baptist Association when a plan was made for gradual emancipation of slaves. About 1810, Benjamin and Dinah removed to Fairfield County, Ohio with others of their family. Their Ohio homestead was near Canal Winchester. They are buried in the family cemetery on the farm of their eldest son, William in Walnut Twp., Pickaway County, Ohio. The following is a description of the natural resources of the Ohio farm of Benjamin Tallman, written during the 1940's by Elmer W. Tallman, grandson of John Tallman Jr. The 160 acres on which three generations of Tallmans lived was in Fairfield county and "lay square with the world", the western edge touching the old boundary of Franklin County, "Highway 33 runs from Columbus in a southeasterly direction. One half mile from Canal Winchester, the highway cuts the southwest corner just enough to place the southwest cornerpost on the south side of the highway. This land is now in Franklin county because of a later survey". "Tallman Genealogical Record: by Virgil Burdette Tallman: "Pickaway County was formed later from territory "picked away" from Franklin, Fairfiield and Ross counties. Original records of the early Tallmans are found in Fairfield and Ross counties at Lancaster and Chillicothe. One mile north of point 6, is an east and west road known as the Lehman Road. This road follows the east and west section line. The section lines of Fairfield and Franklin counties did not correspond, so there is a jog of a few rods in this road where the original county line was. This same jog is noted on the map. Benjamin Tallman and his wife, Dinah (Boone) T. died at point No. 1 on map, and were buried at point 12. In later years their grandson, Nathaniel, bought 30 acres adjoining the Benjamin Tallman farm on the west. In 1878, Nathaniel sold 13 acres of this 30 acres to a cemetery association. This 13 acres is the present Union Grove cemetery. Nathaniel Tallman reserved a strip of ground in the NE corner of the 13 acres for a Tallman Reservation. This included a burial ground known as the Hughes burial ground. Later, (in 1888, I believe) the cemetery took over this Hughes burial ground leaving the Tallman Reservation as it is today. Nathaniel Tallman also deeded to the Cemetery Association a roadway along the east side of the cemetery and leading to the highway. This roadway, of course, had to run along the West line of the original Benjamin Tallman farm. It will be noted that the cemetery occupies the summit of a ridge that runs in an east- westerly direction and extends over into the original Benjamint Tallman farm. The highest point on the farm would be a point on this ridge at the cemetery east line. It was here that Benjamin and Dinah were buried and their graves marked with the small sandstone slabs bearing only the inscription, "B.T." and "D.T." The above mentioned roadway passed directly over these graves. As before noted, at this time, the Tallman graves were moved over the fence, so to speak, into the present Tallman Reservation, except Benjamin and Dinah, whose remains and also their crude markers were moved about 13 miles due south to a Tallman burial ground on the farm of their eldest son. William. (1766-1850). Their graves are decorated yearly by the ladies of the D.A.R. This plot lies on the north east slope of the last hill on State Route 674. Before it joins he Lancaster -Cireleville Road - State Route 188. All summer long Sager Tallman toiled, whacking at the high grass, clearing away bushes and branches, piecing together small chunks of century-old sandstone. And now, in a season where old cemeteries are as apropos as a ghost's hoot or a witch's sneer, the project has drawn together a large, diverse family with roots that twine deep in central Ohio soil. "You just want people to know that somebody has enough respect to do this, "Tallman said" And that somebody remembers." The 68 year old Gahanna resident stood on a hill in Northwestern Pickaway County, surrounded by 35 tombstones that he and his brother, Jerry discovered and restored. The two have been tracing Tallman genealogy for years. But it was unearthing this cemetery, where the oldest stones date back to 1809, that made the project special. THE CEMETERY, a rugged rectangle in the midst of Chestora Peters' 640 acre farm, was a overgrown mess when the two men found it by consulting local records. Weeds reached as high as a man's chin. Cattle and sheep wandered through at will. Since both men were retired, they worked sweaty, eight-hour days to clear the land clean the stones and glue them together like jigsaw puzzles, and set them upright again. The result, said neighbor Ralph Woolever, "has brought Tallmans' out of woodwork". They've come from West Virginia, Michigan and Missouri to view the Tallman brothers' handiwork with their heritage. Jerry Tallman, 73, who now lives in Brooksville, Florida, said many of the stones were submerged and nearly faceless. "I had gotten kind of swamp like in there. The water froze, and flaked off the sandstone," he recalled during a telephone interview from his home. He and Sager glued the pieces together with a special epoxy and hardener. They had to bolt aluminum braces on the backs of some stones, so thin and worn was the sandstone, and they restored the names and dates with a good scrubbing. "There's a lot of pride in our family name." Jerry said. As well there should be. The oldest stone marks the resting place of Benjamin Tallman, Revolutionary War veteran who purchased the land on November 28, 1803, for $2.00 and acre. Local records indicate. "He was one of 11 children, and he was the only one who lived to maturity." Jerry said "Good thing he did, or we all wouldn't be here to day. And he started us off right. He and his wife had 14 children." His wife, who is buried alongside him was named Dinah Boone - first cousin to a fellow named Daniel, Jerry Tallman said. Thomas Brumfield immigrated to America during the early 1700's. The exact date of his coming is probably contained in hither to unpublished records of ships entering and leaving the Port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Thomas had a son Solomon who removed to Berks County, Pennsylvania and lived there all his life. Solomon had a son David who removed to Augusta (later Rockingham) County, Virginia. David Brumfield's wife Patience Tallman bore him seventeen children from 1786 to 1810. She died in Virginia in the year 1816, and was buried in the old cemetery of the Linville Creek Baptist Church. About the year 1817. David Brumfield had lost his wife in 1816. His eldest son Solomon had left home and gone down the Ohio, and was not heard from again. His next son William Tallman Brumfield was in Ohio, land-looking and visiting his grandparents, Benjamin and Dinah Tallman. David himself made a trip to Ohio in 1817 and visited relatives as well as looked the situation over. He also acquired a new wife at some unknown date, by name Jane Mc Cleery (probably a widow). At an unknown date between 1817 and 1820 he moved with his minor children and possibly some married ones to a new home near Lancaster, in Fairfield County, Ohio. He was then well past sixty years of age but apparently vigorous. On the farm which he took in Hocking Twp. Fairfield County, Ohio, is one of those peculiar geological formations known as knobs. The sandstone protrudes upward from the plain for perhaps two or more hundreds of feet. On the side of this knob, David Bromfield built a house. This stands to- day (1960) It is of brick and stone. He took up a goodly piece of land in Walnut Twp., in Pickaway Co., Ohio, which although then was of a wild and unsettled section, was favourably located as to water, the first consideration among our pioneer fathers. He had married Anna Tallman (2nd)and six sons and two daughters were born to them bearing the names of Lewis, John, William, George, Charles, Samuel, Eliza and Sarah. Lewis Scothorn died in 1816, having lived in Walnut twp. during the whole of his life in Ohio. He was a typical pioneer and gained a great local reputation as a woodsman, a great hunter and maker of moccasins. He was a man of great industry and began the clearing of the pioneer farm which he did not live to complete." Anna Tallman had married first in Rockingham Co., a Mr. (James?) Piercy and they had two children: James Piercy who m. 1) Nellie Peters; 2nd) Sally Noble and had 8 children - he died at Canal Winchester, Ohio; and Delilah Piercy who married Thomas Anderson and had 6 children - she died in Pickaway Co., Ohio. "The widow of Lewis Scothorn subsequently married (third) a Mr. Turner and was generally known in her age as Grandmother Turner in her neighborhood, where she lived to advanced years.." (Mr Turner died not long after this marriage). Annah (Tallman) Piercy, Scothorn, Turner resided at the home of her son, Lewis S. Scothorn and his wife, Susannah Westenhaver and their six children. (1850 Census as quoted in "The Scothorn Family", by Ralph H. Lane 1955, page 55). Note also that some descendants insist on the name as being "Annah", although she signed "Anna". "Lewis Scothorn, the founder of the family in Ohio, lies in an old burying ground north of East Ringgold in a spot not far from the place where he first located when he came to Ohio. Where, in his day, waved the tall grass that concealed the richness of fertile land beneath, or grew the dense forest that harbored both wild beast and savage, now smile cultivated fields and on the pleasant slopes live his descendants, who, in his memory wish to preserve the old records. Full as they may be, they can never entirely portray the type of man who was able to leave an old civilized section and successfully combat the hardships and face the discouragements incident to establishing a home in an unbroken wilderness." Harrison), was received for baptism in the Linville Creek Baptist Church October 8, 1803, and was baptized the following day. Her father Benjamin Tallman, had been a member of the church since 13th May, 1792. She and her sister Ann, were both members of the church. Apparently the latter did not long remain a member. At a meeting of the church Saturday, April 9, 1804. On the application of our beloved Sister Ann Harrison, a letter of Dismission and recommendation was granted her, out of the bounds of this Church, may have it in her power to join the same. Spraker gives birth and death dates only for Susannah and adds the following note: "Nearly all died in infancy, those who survived were left orphans and scattered beyond tracing " Spraker and Virgil Tallman use the same incorrect birth order for the children, except that he includes 2 "infants" that she doesn't He supplies no birthdates. they both list William first Nancy and Susannah last, and Benjamin about two - thirds of the way down. This doesn't jibe with the known birthdates of the four surviving children. Most likely, there were 4 or 5 born before Nancy and one or two each between Nancy, William, Benjamin and Susannah, who was the last, being born just one month before her mother died. Speaking of business, we must remember that business was conducted in somewhat the same manner as schools were conducted and as roads were built. Squire John Tallman's accounts as published in Bareis' "History of Madison Twp. " show that he was faultless in his spelling and had some knowledge of bookkeeping. He must have brought this knowledge with him from Virginia, as there was nowhere he could have got it in Madison Twp.! Even his grandson, Samuel Harrison Tallman who was born in 1844, went to Pittsburgh to attend business college.
