The fifth child of James Benton and Mary (Bell) Tallman. At age 9 he moved with his parents to Virginia, the part that is now West Virginia. He grew to manhood there and learned the trade of carpentry and millright. In 1850 Thomas Bell Tallman moved his family to Iowa floating down the Ohio river in a flatboat to the Mississippi, then they took a steamboat to Keokuk. Shortly afterward, they moved with their family to Des Moines County, followed by another move to Henry County. They lived for a few years on a farm in Henry Co. About 1859, they moved back to Des Moines County west of Burlington, wherethey bought 10 acres of timber land. This land was improved; a house was built; an orchard and vineyard were planted. Early in 1869, they sold their little home in Des Moines County, and moved to Clark County Iowa, where they built a home for themselves in which to spend their old age. His health failed so rappidly that on the eight day of Sept.. 1893, he peacefully closed his eyues in the last long sleep. On Aug. 15, 1894 his wife joined him in their heavenly home. Uncle Tommy as he was familiarly known, was a man of exalted aims, sterling character, abounding good nature, and all pervading charity in word and deed, which endeared him to all who knew him. His limeted amount of worldly goods made it necessary to work hard to make ends meet financially, yet he was ever ready to assist those in need. Thomas and Frances Tallman were good neighbors, true friends, loyal citizens and a kind father and mother. Note: John Carl was father if Bruce W. Tallman who was the nephew who completed the "1939 Tallman History" by Dr. George D. Richard Hooker, the bachelor of the family, who came to this county, was a son of Richard and Martha Hooker, of near Ricetown, Maryland. He arrived in the county with his brother Samuel in the year 1810. He was born Octobver 20, 1745, and died in the year 1823, August the 5th. He was near 60 years of age when he landed here, was a bachelor and a man of means and ability. He soon became a large land owner and prominent in the county and in Lancaster, Ohio. In 1816 he was elected a member of the Board of Directors of the First Lancaster Bank, and he was four times a representative na twice a senator in Ohio Legislature. He gave farms to each of the children of his brother Samuel. The farm on which John Stanbery now lives is one of them. Reber Allen lives upon one of them. It is now 77 years since his death, and there is no one living who knew him; hence our sketch is very brief. Too brief, we have no doubt, for a man so highly esteemed in his day and generation. When or where his sister Eurith died, we have not been able to ascertain. She died not marry. Richard was buried at the old Hooker graveyard, which holds the dust of many of the best pioneers of this county. Richard Hooker, always known inthis county as Turkey Run Hooker, or Dick, was a near relative of Samuel, Sr., and Richard Hooker, Sr., of Greenfield Township, Fairfield County, Ohio. 195 iv Nancy5 HOOKER [13578] !REC:Virgil Burdette Tallman's "Tallman Genealogical Record" 196 v Samuel5 HOOKER [13383] !REC:Virgil Burdette Tallman's "Tallman Genealogical Record" 197 vi George5 HOOKER [13905] !REC:Virgil Burdette Tallman's "Tallman Genealogical Record" 38.
