Whitman Jan 30, 1893 Berks County, PA This Indenture made the thirtieth day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninty three, Between AUGUST S. SASSAMAN, HENRY S. SASSAMAN, and JOHN S. SASSAMAN three of the Executors of CHRISTIAN SASSAMAN late of the township of Douglass in the County of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, deceased of the one part, and JOEL. W.D. WHITMAN of the city of Reading is said state and county of the other part. Whereas the said CHRISTIAN SASSAMAN in his life time and at the time of his death was seized in his demesne as of fee of and in two certain tracts of land situate in the said township of Douglass containing respectively one hundred and thirty acres (130 A.) one hundred and fifty one perches, (151 P.) and thirty two (32 H.) And whereas Letters testamentary were in due form of law committed to the said parties of the first part and to WILLOUGHBY S. SASSAMAN And Whereas the said Executors at oan Orphans Court held at Reading in and for the said County of Berks and State of Pennsylvania presents a petition setting forth that the personal estate of the said CHRISTIAN SASSAMAN was insufficient for the payment of his debts there having been no personal estate beside that accepted by the widow containing a just and true account of all his debts and also a statement of all his real estate and praying the Court to order the sale of so much or such part of the said real estate as to the Court should appear necessary for the purposes aforesaid. Whereupon it appearing to the Court that there was no personal estate in the hands of the said Executors it was considered and ordered by the said Court on the tenth day of July A.D. 1891 that the real estate of the said decedent according to the prayers of the petitioners: Whereupon afterwards to wit on the nineteenth day of August, 1891, it appearing to the Court that WILLOUGHBY S. SASSAMAN one of the said Executors had failed to furnish bond the Court shall thereupon direct and order to the three remaining executors. And Whereas in pursuance of the said order and by force and virtue of the laws of this state in such case ----- and provided afterward to wit on the twenty-second day of August, A.D. 1891 the three Executors did offer the herein ---- described real estate for sale at public------------------------ (unreadable) thereof according to law and sold the same unto the said JOEL W. D. WHITMAN for the sum of six thousand two hundred twenty three dollars and ninety cents ($6,223.90) he being the hiest and best bidder offering the highest and best price bidden for the same which sale ---- made to the Judge of the said Court on the nineteenth day of ------ 1891, was confirmed and it was considered and adjudged that the same should be and remain firm and stable forever ------- sufficient security approved by the said court (given by the party of the first part). Approved by the said Court for the ------- of the proceeds of sale having been duly entered as by the Record of the Court moves fully and at large appears. Now this Indenture wittnesseth that the said AUGUST S. SASSAMAN for and in consideration of the sum of six thousand two hundred and twenty three Dollars and ninety cents ($6,223.90) to them in hand paid by the said JOEL W.D. WHITMAN at and before the ensealing and delivery here of the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged --- granted bargained sold aliened enfeoff release and confirm unto the said JOEL W.D. WHITMAN his heirs and assigns. All that certain messuage ------- plantation and tract or piece of land lying and being in the said township of Douglass, Bounded and described as follows to wit: Beginning at a hickory tree thence by the same north eighty four degrees west ninety five perches to a post a corner of DANIEL DARRAH's land thence by the same south twenty five and a quarter degrees east forty two perches to a stone a corner of land of LEVI BOYER thence by the same south eighty four and a half degrees west one hundred and eight and five tenths perches to a post thence by the same south eleven degrees east sixty two perches to a post thence south sixteen degrees west six and three tenths perches to a white oak tree a corner of land of GEORGE R. YORKEY, thence by the same south twenty one degrees west sixty six and eight tenths perches to a post a corner thence by the same north seventy eight and half degrees west- twenty nine and two tenths perches ---- Thence by the same north sixty nine and a half degrees west thirty two and one tenth perches to a post thence by the same south twenty degrees west nineteen and three tenths perches to a post thence north seventy two and a half degrees west fourteen and seven tenths perches to a post a corner in a line of lands of the late WILLIAM BRUNNER, deceased thence by the same north twenty seven and a half degrees west one hundred and twenty two perches to a post thence by land of OLIVER H. FISHER, north sixty three and a quarter degree east one hundred forty eight and two tenths perches to a post thence by lands of JOHN DAVIDHEISER south six degrees east thirty seven and one tenth perches and one hundred and fifty one perches (130 A. 131 P.) more or less and also All that certain tract of timber and sprout land situate in said Douglass Township bounded and described as follows to wit: Beginning at a black oak in a corner of land late of FREDERICK ALBRIGHT thence by the same north seventeen degrees west nineteen and six tenths perches to a stone thence north fifty one and a half degrees west eighteen and six tenths perches to a ---------- S. Sassaman, Henry S. Sassaman and John S. Sassaman, Executors and acknowledged the above indenture to be their act and deed and desire the same might be Recorded as such. Witness my hand and Notorial Seal. Edwin Sassaman {seal} Notary Public Recorded June 28, A.D.1893 Simson Becker, Recorder NOTE: Christian Sassaman was born Dec. 25, 1809 and died March 17, 1890. He married a distant cousin Maria Sassaman, born Sept 10, 1813 died June 29/30, 1893. Christian and Maria are both buried at the Fairview Cemetery in Boyertown, Berks County, PA. They had 6 children: Willoughby who married Catharine "Lydia" Landis; Judge August S. Sassaman m. 1st to Louisa DeTurk, m. 2nd her sister Sophia DeTurk; Mary who married Henry Hoffman; Lucy Ann, wife of Joel W.D. Whitman (the same Whitman who purshased the property at sale); Henry S. Sassaman, m. Sarah Ann Neiman; and John S. Sassaman who m. 1st Elizabeth Muthard and 2nd Diana Miller. Edwin Sassaman the above Notary Public was a grandson of Christian Sassaman and the son of August S. Sassaman.
