Death Notice of MAHLON HARTMAN [Source:The Belleville Daily Advocate, Belleville, Illinois March 29, 1934] MAHLON HARTMAN, 81, a retired farmer, died suddenly at his home in Freeburg (IL) at 8:00 a.m. today. Hartman was about his home as usual, and was in the kitchen when he was suddenly stricken with apoplexy. Mr. And Mrs. Hartman resided in Freeburg since 1915, at which time he discontinued active farming operations. Hartman was born in Berks county, Pennsylvania, July 13, 1852, a son of the late VALENTINE & HANNAH HARTMAN, nee ROTHERMEL. HARTMAN was the youngest son in a family of ten boys and five girls, and came from Pennsylvania Quaker parentage. The family homestead was within twenty miles [Ed. Actually about 90 miles] of the site of the Battle of Gettysburg and three of Mr. Hartman's brothers answered President Lincoln's first call for volunteers. When 19 years of age, Hartman began teaching school in Berks county (PA), teaching six terms there and attending Keystone State Normal University during the intervening time. He then came to Illinois and taught (in) the Barth school, south of Mascoutah (IL), for three years. He then became a salesman for the Deering Harvester Company of Chicago and the Gundlach Drill Company, of Belleville (IL). He then married Miss MARY RUMER at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. BERNARD RUMER, Sr., of Mascoutah, October 6, 1881. Besides the widow, four sons survive: HARRISON H. HARTMAN, of Freeburg; DAVID D. HARTMAN, of DuQuoin (IL); BEN V. HARTMAN, an employee of the McKinley Motor Co., at home; and MILTON M. HARTMAN, of Mounds; sister, Mrs. HANNAH SCHALTER, of Reading, PA. Hartman was a charter member of the Freeburg Camp #2526 Modern Woodmen of America and a charter stockholder of the First National Bank of Freeburg. The funeral will be held Saturday at 2 :00 p.m., from the family home to the Elmwood cemetery, Freeburg. Rev. VIRGIL GOULD of the Ziegler M. E. church and former pastor of the Freeburg M. E. church will conduct the service. [The Daily Advocate newspaper, Belleville, Illinois, April 6, 1934] The eulogy for the late MAHLON HARTMAN was delivered by Rev. VIRGIL GOULD, of Ziegler, at the family home and at Elmwood cemetery, where interment was made on Saturday afternoon. Mrs. ROLAND WIECHERT, of Belleville, sang "Somewhere the Sun is Shining," and "Some Day We'll Understand." The pall bearers were FRED ETLING, EDWAD KAMPER, CHARLES SCHIEK, FRED FISCHER, FRED NOLD and WILLIAM RANDLE. Among the out-of-town people who attended the funeral were: Mr. And Mrs. E. G. B. METZ; Mr. And Mrs. ELMER METZ; O. L. RUMER, son HERBERT and daughter, Miss MYRTLE; RICHARD RUMER and son ROBERT; Mr. And Mrs. WALTER RUMER; MORTON RUMER; GEORGE M. RUMER and daughter, of St. Louis; BEN RUMER, Mr. And Mrs. BEN R. RUMER, Jr.; Mr. And Mrs. FRED BONHARDT, Mr. And Mrs WALTER SANDERS; Mr. And Mrs. C. A. GRIFFEN, Mrs. VERNON BOYD; Mr. And Mrs. BOONE GRIFFEN, and Mr. And Mrs. LACLEDE GRIFFEN, of Belleville (IL); J. A. RUMER, Mrs. ADELIA MORLOCK and daughter, Miss LEONTINE, of Mascoutah (IL).
