HEMPHILL - Successful in the law, and prominent in social and business circles in Altoona, Pennsylvania. John H. Hemphill was born in that city June 28, 1889. His father William F. Hemphill, a native of Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. His mother, Helen M. (Thrust) Hemphill, born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, is living. From the public school, in which his education began, he went to the local high school, and thence to Dickinson College, from which he was graduated in the class of 1912 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Then he went to the Dickinson Law School, and was graduated in the class of 1915 with the degrees of Bachelor of Laws and Master of Arts. He has practiced law in Altoona ever since, and is highly regarded in all his activities. His office is in the Mountain City Trust Building. Mr. Hemphill is a Mason, belonging to all the bodies for that order, including the Scottish Rite and the Shrine. He is a member of the Blair County Bar Association, the Pennsylvania State Bar Association, and his clubs are the Spruce Creek Rod and Gun and the Lions. He is also a member of the American Legion, and has served one term as solicitor for the county controllers. He enlisted in the United States Army in February, 1918, in the Ordnance Corps, and served until December, 1918, when he was discharged with the rank of sergeant. Mr. Hemphill married, in 1923, Harriet L. Swoope, a native of Altoona, Pennsylvania, and they have one child, Harriet L. Mr. Hemphill attends the Lutheran Church.
