LOWRIE, M.D., is regarded as one of the leading physicians of Tyrone. A veteran of the medical profession, who has given years of service to the people of Tyrone, both as a doctor and as a public official, Dr. Lowrie is a foremost citizen of the borough. He is active in every conceivable affair of importance, holds a prominent place in the medical societies of the county and State, and is a Fellow in the American Medical Association. He is known as a profoundly enthusiastic lay agitator in behalf of education, for clean politics and for increased public welfare, and he is honored for his principles and his activities. Dr. William L. Lowrie was born in Warriors Mark, Huntingdon County, the son of Jonathan R. Lowrie, a native a Butler, Butler County, who was prominent lawyer throughout a long and useful life, and Mary A. (Lyon) Lowrie, a native of Huntingdon County, both of whom are deceased. In the schools of Birmingham, not far from his native borough, in Huntingdon County, the future doctor and public official received his early education. Subsequently, he took his medical course in the University of Pennsylvania and received his Doctor of Medicine in 1883. Feeling that the best prospects of success for the young, inexperienced physician were to be found in the vicinity of his birthplace, where numerous friends and acquaintances would assist in the climb, Dr. Lowrie returned to Huntingdon County following his graduation from the Medical School of the university and established himself in practice in Mapleton. Here he remained four years, until 1887, and then moved to Tyrone, where for nearly four decades he has be in continuous practice, with eminent success increasing through the years. He has his offices at No. 900 Washington Avenue. From the beginning of his residence and practice in Tyrone, Dr. Lowrie has been an influential factor in its affairs. Soon recognized as an able physician, and as an interested student of public affairs, he was elected a school director of Tyrone, an office he held for one term. Subsequently, he served eight years on the Borough Council, a tenure that did more than increase his reputation and prestige. He is now a member of the consulting staff of the Huntingdon Memorial Hospital, and Mercy Hospital, Altoona. Dr. Lowrie is a member of the Blair County Medical Association, the American Medical Society, the Medical Society of the State of Pennsylvania, and Fellow of the American Medical Association. He also belongs to and is prominently active in Tyrone Lodge, No. 494, and the Free and Accepted Masons, of which lodge he is a Past Master; the York Rite bodies in total, including the Knights Templar, and to the Tyrone Club. He and his family attend the First Presbyterian Church of Tyrone. Dr. Lowrie married, in 1887, Bertha Finney, a native of this State. There are three children of this union: 1, Mary L., a missionary in China; 2, Sarah F., the wife of Robert A. Love, of Brooklyn, New York; 3, Dr. William L., Jr., now a successful practicing physician in Detroit, Michigan.
